Nice article in the Post about his history: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/how-chef-peter-chang-stopped-running-and-started-empire-building/2015/03/16/66ff2378-c750-11e4-aa1a-86135599fb0f_story.html

That was an interesting article about Peter Chang. Thanks for sharing. I was curious to see if he also owned PF Chang (restaurant), but they are not the same.

The US Capitol building had many immigrants working on the building including British American architects, a German immigrant on the dome, and Brumidi an Italian immigrant on the interior including the painting beneath the dome.

Per Compare Supermarket’s FB page they sell “Freshly cooked food, fresh produce, fresh meat, Latin American food, money order, money transfer, lotto, delivery in a 5 mile radius, and much more,” and “we sell lots of hispanic products!” They get a 5 out of 5 stars in Google from 8 reviews, most of which were in Spanish and provided glowing praise for the quality of the food and customer service. I didn’t go in to try to find out more about this store because (1) I’d forgotten to bring my lock with me, and (2) trying to avoid going into any stores unless absolutely necessary due to Covid, particularly in Florida.

This little restaurant, Pad Thai, is a small family-owned restaurant on Lee Highway. It had been here for a number of years. have eaten here on several occasions. It is where I was first introduced to Thai cooking.

Bukom Cafe. A popular spot for West African food and music. It is apparently named after a popular square in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

Ines Place is a small family restaurant on Main Street in Fairfax that has been here for many years. They serve Salvadoran and Mexican food. It looks like there is a help wanted sign in the window but it is written Spanish so I have no idea what job they are trying to fill.

#ImHer – Carl Schurz – US Diplomat, Union General, US Senator, Newspaper Editor, Secretary of the Interior, German Immigrant.

This Park is next to Gracie Mansion between East End Ave in Yorkville and the East River. We lived on the Carl Schurz Siedlung when we were in Frankfurt am Main, and toured the Prairie Style Carl Schurz HS in the Irving Park neighborhood in NW Chicago during an architecture open house a few years ago.

Taco Zocalo on Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston started as a food truck before becoming a “land based” restaurant. Since this restaurant is close to The Bike Lane where RBC starts some of theri rides, I have eaten there several times. They make great fish tacos.

Because the workers at the Reston location are Latino, I was surprised to learn that the owner immigrated from Afghanistan. Here is his story from their web site: Chef Basir brings his love for food, hospitality and business to every meal. For as long as he can remember, he has enjoyed giving people a unique and fun experience through food. After many years of successful business ownership, he took his passion one step further when he completed a degree in Culinary Arts from the world-renowned Art Institute. With the belief that fine cuisine should be available and convenient for everyone, he founded Chef On Wheels in 2012 and has been spreading deliciousness in the DC area through a snazzy red truck. In November 2017 Chef Basir opened up the first Chef on Wheels restaurant in Reston, VA.

I love this place and its delicious tacos. We stopped there for lunch last year after Kelley’s Reston Public Art ride.

Café Blèriot XI on E 83rd St in Yorkville is owned by Georgi Dimov, a Bulgarian artist My barista today was also Bulgarian (family member?). Yorkville had a large German and Central European population from the late 19th Century though the mid-20th Century.

Glad to see this local small business is open all year round. Here’s some more details about the owner and how he started:
