Pupatella. About 13 years ago, Enzo who had immigrated from Naples and his wife opened a cart serving Neopolitan style pizza in Ballston since it’s difficult as a newcomer to open a restaurant. Now years later he has a budding chain of pizzerias from Dupont Circle to Reston. Long live Pupatella!

Borek-G: Turkish Mom’s Cookin’ (Falls Church, VA)
We first were introduced to Borek-G at a local farmers market before they opened the restaurant/store in Falls Church. Delicious food and nice people.
Their story was in the Washington Post this past summer: At Borek-G, a mother and son dish out sublime tastes of their Turkish homeland

I will award five points to a Freezing Saddler who finds this place. But, unfortunately, I cannot give hints because any hints I can think of about this establishment will give its name and location away. So the only two tips I can provide are 1) the place is new, and 2) it is tucked away from a busy street.

Today’s field trip was to Baku Delicious, an Azerbaijani grocery store, bakery and coffee shop on Pickett Road in Fairfax. Besides buying some goodies, we received a history lesson on Azerbaijan’s “Black January Memorial Day” and a gift of Halva, a sweet treat of Azerbaijan. They had made the Halva in honor of their Black January Memorial Day. It remembers the civilians who died when Russian brought troops into Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan and killed 149 civilians and injured about 800 civilians. January 20, 1990, is considered the turning point of the people of Azerbaijan’s fight for independence from Communist Rule. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_January

Mama Ayesha, a middle eastern restaurant in Adams Morgan. Mama Ayesha was born in Jerusalem immigrated to the US where she worked at various embassies as a cook, and then later opened this restaurant. It’s such a landmark that on the side of the wall there is a mural of various presidents with her. Although she has since passed away, it is now apparently run by her nephews and great nephews. I’m glad to see that it has survived the pandemic as it was slim picking for a while!

In addition to an impressive assortment of produce and Mexican grocery items, they also make and sell tacos, quesadillas, and gorditas. I didn’t partake since I’d just eaten breakfast an hour earlier, but hope to give them a try for lunch while I’m here visiting family in Orlando.

Russia House Restaurant in Herndon. Russia House Restaurant opened in July of 1992 by Ali and Homerya Darugar. A family-owned restaurant, together they created an atmosphere of aristocratic dining with a classic cuisine and a warm feeling that you are dining at your grandmother’s table. Homeyra moved from Russia with her grandparents to Switzerland, where she learned to cook in her grandmother’s kitchen. She brought her great culinary talents here to the United States and created the exquisite menu and served as the head chef. Russia House welcomes diners with open arms, feeding them Traditional Russian, French and Modern Fares. Drink, eat and be merry and understand what true Russian elaborate hospitality means.

It has been a number of years, but I have eaten here for a special occasion date with my husband. The food was delicious.
