ParticipantRiver-Sea Chocolates, located in Chantilly, is a craft chocolate business started by Mariano and Krissee D’Aguiar in 2017, with a mission to connect the Amazon Basin (where Mariano grew up) to the northern Virginia community. They buy their cacao beans from small-scale farms in Brazil and other countries that use sustainable, organic farming methods. The D’Aguiar’s believe that their production of craft chocolate helps provide jobs for people in the Amazon basin in lieu of work that destroys the rain-forest. Today was my fourth trip River-Sea to buy some of their scrumptious chocolate.

ParticipantBen’s Chili Bowl, a landmark on U St. Ben Ali, the namesake of the restaurant, is actually a Trinidadian of Indian descent who studied dentistry at Howard University. Enclosed is an NPR article about how he drew from both his Black and Asian heritage and wanted to bring some spice to America. A celebration of both his heritage!

Hmm. It’s just 30 miles from me. I do not mind riding that distance for craft chocolate.

ParticipantRiding around looking for my name in lights I rode by Las Bravas from Budapest. It smelled so good outside as they were getting ready for the lunch crowd. I asked the waiter if the owner was from Budapest and he said yes but had been in Spain for 15 years!

ParticipantHoly Rosary Church. Although this area never had a substantial no of Italian immigrants there used to some that lived around Swampoodle and Judiciary Square including artisans that worked on the Capitol and other buildings. Unfortunately most of them left and many of the buildings were demolished when building I-395 and Union Station but the church still remains and continues to give sermons in Italian. There is also a cultural institute next door that teaches Italian language and cooking, teaching la dolce vita.

It’s well worth the ride. I spend too much money and eat too much chocolate when I visit this lovely gem! 🤣 (There is also a great granola store next door.)

And reputedly a great beer and BBQ place in the same building complex – although I haven’t been there. Forgot to mention the granola place – thanks Cathy [emoji4]

ParticipantAriake is a family-owned traditional Japanese restaurant in Reston, opened in 2005. They’re known for their fresh ingredients, and the menu includes sushi, sashimi, teriyaki, tempura and donburi. Donburi is a Japanese dish that’s served in a bowl of rice topped with meat, vegetables, eggs, or other ingredients, and then covered by another layer of seasoned rice. We rarely dine out and have only had sushi here once, pre-Covid, and it was indeed delicious. Just read about donburi on their website and will have to give it a try. They’re on the corner of Glade Drive and Colts Neck Drive, across from the Hunters Woods Shopping Center.
