Lily’s Chocolate & Coffee, 175 Maple Ave East in Vienna, VA, opened in 2021.
    acef4ea0daebf2fe77cd60fae9faefdb.jpg
Guessing that Lily’s would welcome cyclists – note the ornamental bicycles flanking their entrance! Lily’s is owned by siblings Saif and Lily Alobaidi, who immigrated from Iraq in 2009. With their own business, the siblings are introducing Vienna to Lokma, an Iraqi fried pastry paired with a sweet topping. Lokma is traditionally served in Iraq with toppings like honey or sugar syrup, but Lily’s offers its own version of Lokma topped with chocolate. Aside from Lokma, Lily’s has other desserts such as churros, chocolate mousse cake, pistachio and strawberry mousse, gluten-free cookies, croissants, tiramisu, and more.

La Madeleine French Bakery & Cafe, 1833 Fountain Dr, Reston, VA.
    fc64ab5e679812d5b95fd68955d0cfae.jpg
Although this is one of 86 restaurants in a chain, it was founded in February 1983 by Patrick Esquerré, a Loire Valley-born businessman. Esquerré opened his first bakery on Mockingbird Lane in Dallas, Texas near Southern Methodist University and it soon expanded to a café. From the La Madeleine website: “Over three decades since our founding, we continue to celebrate the integrity of French cuisine, using fresh ingredients and recipes that have been passed from one generation to the next.” Pre-Covid I used to enjoy coffee and pastry at La Madeleine after early morning walks with friends.

This restaurant attracted my attention with its bright and colorful lights when I passed it today. Shinwari is the Pashtun restaurant started by a tribe living in the northern areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan near the Khyber Pass. It is the tribe known for its authentic Pashtun foods admired by the masses throughout Pakistan.

The awning says, “Afghan Gourmet & Chophouse,” and they serve authentic classic Afghan recipes passed down through the generations. This is the third Afghan restaurant owner Omar Masroor has opened in the DMV. The other two are in DC and Springfield.

The Roasted Boon, an Eritrean owned coffee shop in Shaw. They are one of the closest coffee roasters to downtown and carry a variety of beans from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Guatemala. Boon is apparently the name of the coffee-making ceremony which they occasionally hold.
