Today’s find was Ethiopic Restaurant on H Street NE in DC. Their web page states that they focus on Ethiopian cuisine and culture. Traditional Ethiopian ingredients are introduced to evoke the true taste of Ethiopia. The name Ethiopic or Ge’ez is a classical language and ancient script of Ethiopia dating back 4th century AD and which is still being used in the liturgy of many Ethiopian churches.

The following comes from one of many media write-ups of the restaurant. “If you’ve never had Ethiopian food, you’ll love Ethiopic. It serves richly flavored, spiced and stewed meat dishes with lamb, beef, and chicken and dark, delightful vegetarian dishes like curried potatoes with garlic, herbs and jalapeno, and split red lentils stewed with red pepper sauce.” They also offer drinks from a varied list of Ethiopian beers and wines.

We welcome you to come in and enjoy our espresso bar, lunch, dinner; or take home any of our deliciously prepared foods to enjoy with your family and friends.”

Stumbled upon this organization on my ride today. From their website: “From humble beginnings in 1966 in Taiwan, our organization expanded to the USA as its first overseas organization in 1989 to spread the spirit and mission through compassion and hope. This is their Greater Washington DC Region office, 1516 Moorings Dr, Reston, VA. Perhaps they could be convinced to got to Ukraine.

D Light Cafe, a cafe owned by two Ukrainian sisters in Adams Morgan. They serve all day brunch. I’m not sure if they have anything specifically Ukrainian unless everyone in Ukraine also has croissant and avocado toast but the few things that I’ve tried have been delightful. Their business has recently picked up from everyone coming to support Ukrainian businesses.

Copacabana, a Brazilian bakery and cafe. They were originally a bakery somewhere in MD and then expanded to have a cafe in Adams Morgan. They have lots of Brazilian snacks like pao de queijo cheese bread and kibe as many Lebanese immigrated to South America. Also find it quite amusing that they are getting ready for St Patrick’s Day–don’t think they celebrate this in Brazil but when in Rome do as the Romans do!

900 Degrees Brick Oven Pizza is a family-owned restaurant. The Falzarano Family moved to the United States in December of 1995 from Benevento Italy. The Falzarano’s worked in the restaurant business for several years before deciding to open up their own restaurant. Ultimately, the Falzarano family opened 900 Degree Brick Oven Pizza, in Purcellville, Virginia. They had their grand opening on November 13th, 2010, and it’s been a great hit since, offering the best pizza in Northern Virginia with both the Neapolitan (staying true to the Napoli brick oven style) and New York styles.

German Gourmet (5838 Columbia Pike, Falls Church) first opened in 1962 and operated as a specialty German import grocery and delicatessen for 45 years. The original owner Mr. Wilhelm Wenzel retired in 1978 and sold the business to Mr. Raimund Pagani of Switzerland. Over the 20 years that Mr. Pagani owned and operated German Gourmet, he added new products from Switzerland and new deli services and gift items. Finally, Mr. Pagani sold the German Gourmet to Michael Haene and Clifford Haene. The Haene brothers own the store now and offer an extensive selection of imported groceries, beers, and wines, plus great deli selections of bratwurst, sausages, cold cuts, and cheeses. There is also a bakery section, and many homemade items are available.

German American Heritage Museum in Chinatown. According to the blurb, it “is the only national museum to celebrate, display, and commend the achievements of immigrants who came from German-speaking countries and achieved the American dream.”
