ParticipantLos Tios is a family-owned Mexican restaurant in Leesburg. The Mejia family opened their first Los Tios in Del Ray in 2004 and then expanded to Leesburg in 2008. My husband, son and I had the privilege of being one of their first customers as we stumbled on their Leesburg restaurant during their opening week when we rode our bikes out to Leesburg and went looking for a place to eat. They make THE freshest, best-tasting salsa I have ever tasted. Needless to say, we have come back without our bikes so we could have a full dinner.

ParticipantYum’s, a popular Chinese takeout on 14th St. They are known for their chicken wings with mambo or mumbo sauce which is something unique to Chinese takeouts in DC. The sauce is a bit like a sweet and sour sauce and has been popularized that you can now find it in supermarkets and restaurants. I thought it may have been invented by one of the Chinese takeouts but apparently the sauce may have been invented in Chicago. The Chinese takeouts though have probably helped to popularize it!

ParticipantGuapos is a family-owned Mexican restaurant serving delicious food in large portions. They make their own tortillas in a huge tortilla maker in the back of the restaurant near the kitchen. This was one of my office’s favorite places for group luncheons and I ate here often in the latter part of my career. The business was started by the Rincon family after they arrived in Virginia in the late 1970’s.

ParticipantSwahili Village, a delicious Kenyan restaurant downtown. In addition to the mouth-watering grilled meat I discovered that Kenyan food has a lot of Indian influence including chapati flat bread and samosas–an immigrant heritage of Indians in East Africa. And now they bring that to share here!

ParticipantI am pretty sure this is the place that Serdar mentioned while we were on the Fairfax City ImHer ride. The Sultan Gourmet Market is kind of hidden on a side street in Fairfax (Warwick Avenue). I never knew that this place existed. I cannot read anything on their Facebook page so cannot tell you much about it. Per an article in the Northern Virginia Magazine, https://northernvirginiamag.com/food/food-features/2017/08/16/provisions-sultan-gourmet-market/ this is the place to go to find the obscure ingredients you need for your Mediterranean and Turkish cooking needs. The 2017 article states that the owner is Halit Bozlagan.
