Since I was going to Vienna for the Subway, I figured I look around for an appropriate entry for ImHer. Yas is a grocery and bakery located on Church Street in VIenna. http://www.yasbakery.com/ They are a family-owned business that was established in 1986. They offer a wide selection of house made pastries and baked bread and carry a variety of grocery items ranging from all kinds of tea to middle eastern goods from Iran, Turkey, Arab countries and local produce. I’ll need to come back when I have a bike lock and mask so I can go explore another ethnic bakery and grocery store.

Julia’s empanadas in Adams Morgan. My introduction and perhaps many others too to empanadas since it is open late. Not sure where the owners are from but guessing South America. I like that they have different kinds from different countries from Chile to Jamaica. Not sure if it’s this or the Dupont Circle location but it claims to be the first empanada shop in DC having opened in 1993.

Sri Venkateswara Lotus Temple of Virginia was established in the year 2003 to serve the devotional, cultural and spiritual needs of the Northern Virgina community in accordance with distinctly Vedic traditions. SVLT acquired approximately 18 acres of land in 2003 and 2005 at Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia. The temple is in the form of Lotus with petals suspended in the pond. The significance Lotus flower personifies serenity, grandeur, and wealth. Lotus flower quality is to remain pure and clean even if surrounded by dirt and malice.

They have been gathering on the “campus” in the completed structures. Based on their website, the construction was planned to be completed in phases.

The middle picture shows the current status of the building of their temple. While the Lostus structure has been at this site for years, it looks the completion of the Lostus is part of Phase II. The third picture shows what the temple will look like when it is completed.

The owners might be from Peru. I once had delicious empanadas from Peruvian Brothers in Crystal City Water Park.

Guapo’s in Fair Lakes Shopping Center

The first Guapo’s was opened in Tenleytown, MD in 1990. Originally from Colombia, Hector Rincón opened Guapo’s at a time in the early ’90s when Tex-Mex and Southwestern cuisines were trendy both nationally and in DC. It has remained in the family and grown to multiple restaurants in Virginia, Maryland and DC. This picture is from their Fairfax location in Fair Lakes Shopping Center.

My daughter studied Chinese in high school & college. I picked her up once a week from high school when she stayed after for a club. For awhile there she’d want to stop at this restaurant in Ballston for pot stickers on the way home.

The first time I went in with her, the man at the counter stood listening patiently & seriously while Emily struggled with her Mandarin. He might have offered a correction once, but he never slipped into English, though I’m sure he spoke it fine. I wd touched by how he clearly remembered my daughter and offered such paternal help.

That man could have been a good language teacher. It takes a lot to listen and not to correct to avoid discouragement. Great story, Nadine!

Moby Dick House of Kabab was started by Mike Daryoush, an immigrant from Iran. He opened his first restaurant, a luncheonette that served American cuisine in 1989. The restaurant was not doing well so he decided to build a traditional clay oven, like the kind used in his home country of Iran. The started out making pitas. The success of the fresh pita on the menu was so spectacular, it opened the eyes of Mike Daryoush and his partner to an opportunity, one where they could continue to use their high-quality ingredients, and meticulously developed recipes, but on a Persian-inspired menu – one filled with the rich flavors of Persian spices, tender beef, chicken, and lamb kabobs and all the other delicious foods they grew up with in Iran. So, they set out to create this menu, and Moby’s Luncheonette turned into Moby Dick House of Kabob. The change to Persian cuisine brought so much success to their business that, in 1992, he opened his second Moby Dick House of Kabab. He has gone on to open 20 Moby Dick House of Kababs throughout the DMV.

Tiki Thai is in Reston on Sunset Hills Rd, west of Reston Pkwy. From their website: “Tiki is the best way to summarize Polynesian culture with one word…. The modern day tiki culture celebrates Polynesian traditions through exotically decorated bars and restaurants that aim to transport you into a tropical oasis. While it’s fun to celebrate Polynesian culture, at TIKI THAI we also honor it. Without compromising integrity and staying true to the history, we aim to deliver the same experience that historians like Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt (aka Donn Beach) feel in love with in the early 1930s while traveling the islands of Oceania. Around the same time the kingdom of Siam transitioned to what we know as Thailand today. Thailand’s deep culinary history pays homage to neighboring country’s like Malaysia, Indonesia and India that have heavy influence within every dish. These two cultures carry a strong heritage worthy of respect and it is our pleasure to share our passion hospitality while honoring both cultures here at TIKI THAI.”
