ParticipantI have a couple of pairs Louis Garneau covers (Wind Dry and Neo Protect models). They do a decent job of keeping the shoes from getting soaked, but they won’t keep them completely dry if that’s the desire.

ParticipantI have the Pearl Izumi elite mtb shoe covers which are supposed to be pretty good but I wore them on a three or four hour ride in that underperforming nor’easter we had back in September and my feet were soaked (as was the rest of me except for my head, thanks to a plastic bag from Target). That might not have been the best test for them (long ride, steady rain, purposefully riding through puddles on C&O), but the thought of putting on wet shoes to ride home in isn’t pleasant. I guess the easiest (and cheapest) thing to do would be to stash some wool socks and a few more of the Target bags here at work and wear them inside my shoes and over the dry wool socks for ride home if they’re wet from ride in.
Getting cold and wet on a ride is fine. Starting the ride already cold and wet means I’ll probably punk out and metro home.

ParticipantI don’t know about plastic bags, but I can definitely recommend keeping an extra pair of dry socks in the bag at all times. They take up no space and weigh next to nothing.

I might also suggest keeping an extra pair of underwear at work, just in case.

I would think Frazz wouldn’t be riding around with his undies under his padded tights, but as the tagline says, I’m new around here.

Nice catch. Does anyone have any info on how Northwave shoes are sized (do they tend to run narrow, wide; short, long, etc.)? I have wide feet, so sometimes I have to get a size or two larger to get an acceptable fit.

Their length is consistent with the pearl izumi and 45nrth shoes that I have. The Northwave shoes are narrower, but they are more “race” inspired than the others. I’m not sure if that makes a difference.

ParticipantWestern Bike Works has a ridiculous daily deal on Vredestein Gran Fondo TriComps ($23!). I’ve been riding the DuoComps for several years now on my everyday bike, so picked up a pair of these for my fair weather bike.

You know enough now not to ask me about plastic bags, at the very least. KWL is clearly more knowledgeable in that area.
I’ve been riding with Pearl Izumi socks that dry fast – it’s the ones REI puts on sale for cheap a couple of times a year. The last time my shoes got waterlogged, these socks still dried fairly quickly once I took them out of the shoes and off my feet. I do carry a 2nd pair of socks when I commute, but they are regular socks that I wear in the office, and I change out of them back to the PIs to ride home.

You just haven’t thought it through:
If one is not wearing any under one’s padded tights, then one must remember to put it in one’s bag.December 31, 2015 at 3:31 am #1043701hozn

In my experience Northwave are sized like Specialized. They are a wider shoe than many other brands, though maybe a tiny bit narrower than Specialized [where it matters for my foot], but I wear the same size in both comfortably. I am not talking about Specialized “wide” sizes here, which are wide in toe box (but apparently that is useless to my foot).
For reference, I am a 12W in Clarks and 13 in Asics. I wear 48 in Specialized and Northwave comfortably (they are a tiny bit long but width is great and length isn’t a problem). Or 48 Giro HV fits well. The 48 PI shoes I had felt extra long, but were wide enough. The size-48 Exustar boots I recently picked up are too narrow; same with 48 in Shimano.

Came home from the Happy Hour to find that my new Northwave boots had arrived. I got size 44, one size larger than normal, and at least sitting here at the ‘puter, it feels just right. Of course, I wasn’t smart enough to also order a set of cleats, so I’ll have to wait until the weekend to try them out.

ParticipantRevolution Cycles put their 2015 TEKOA-IE electric bike on pre-order sale for $1999 (MSRP $3,200). Not sure if it’s a great deal or not, but I thought I’d share in case someone wants an e-bike.
My husband told me to buy it. I knew he wouldn’t support my N+1 desire without ulterior motives, which was confirmed when he explained it was so we could buy a house further from DC and I could still commute in. I told him I’m not buying the bike, and we’re still not moving more than a 15 mile (1 way) bike commute to my office. So HMPH.
I will look at investing in an e-bike once kids show up in our lives. I’ll need some help hauling them to daycare, but that’s not happening soon.
