ParticipantThis looks interesting, but I’m curious if there’s a problem with water ingestion while riding in the rain or through a deep puddle.
Bicycle inner tube pumps itself up as you ride

I have had the opposite experience. I think they suck. I almost ruined a pair of dress shoes, thinking they would keep them dry the first time I wore them–believing what I read on their web site.
The problem is that the material the bottom is made of soaks right through. And, for me, in order to stretch them on, the bottoms come up the sides slightly, soaking the lower side of the shoe.
The neoprene works great, and I will continue to use these to keep my feet warm on dry days, but I need to find something else for rainy days (I wore my sandals, sans socks, last week, but that was about as cold as I can tolerate). Perhaps your tape job is what I need to do. What kind of tape do you use? I have a hard time believing the tape won’t come off almost every time it rains, though. But, nothing I’ve used works better than grocery store plastic bags with rings of tape applied on both ends of the cleat and around the ankle. It’s definitely not a glamour look, but my feet, socks and shoes were perfectly dry (but for some sweat) when I got to work this morning.

Next time you get all gussied up in your shoe bags please take a pic and post them so I can see how the master does it. I’m here shoving newspapers into my shoes and I know they’re still going to be wet for the ride home.

Judging by the forecast, you’ll need this tomorrow a.m. Here’s a better description: Put the bag over the shoe. I wrap tape around the toe of the shoe, just in front of the cleat. I also wrap tape just behind the cleat, basically around the arch of your foot. I also close the bag up at the ankle by wrapping tape around the ankle. I just used packaging tape this morning, which worked perfectly well. The bottoms of my shoes have vents and screw holes for the cleats. I close those up with a couple layers of duct tape on the sole on the inside of the shoe.

I wore sandals. My shoes were perfectly dry in my bag.

ParticipantMy get up this morning was neoprene socks, then sandals. Plastic baggies went over the sandals, then the zipper of the tights went over the top of the baggies. The final step was Gore boot covers. Worked like a charm.

I tried the grocery bag thing several months ago. It was a near-disaster. The bags got caught in the cranks and I nearly fell. I gave up and let my shoes get waterlogged.
Maybe if I had tape it would be different. But now I have overshoes so I’ll probably never try the bag thing now.

Grocery bags are too thin and too big. Washington Post plastic bags are the perfect shape and slightly thicker. Sunday edition bags are a bit bigger than the dailies and fit my size 47 shoes better. I’ve found the blue New York Times bags are too fragile. It works best if the weather is cold enough for tights so the top of the bag can be tucked in. I may try the taping thing for warm days.

ParticipantI’ve got some nice Shimano SH-MW81 winter boots to keep my feet dryish, but it has to actually be winter to use them. I haven’t even bothered with booty covers recently because of all the warmth. Looking forward to some winter weather so can use all the gear.

ParticipantThere have been two days in Dec where I remember wishing I’d put the covers on my shoes (sette commuters, wool socks). For whatever reason, my feet get cold easily when biking and I LOVELOVELOVELOVE LOVE cold weather.
Honestly, if I could have found those burly moon boot looking 45NRTH’s, I would have bought those too.

ParticipantAlso, Jenson has the Shimano SH-MW81s for $140 at the moment.
If we believe in winter, perhaps it will come.

…but in the meantime, I’m browsing rain gear – waterproof covers for my regular commuter shoes and waterproof gloves. Yesterday’s mist/light rain wasn’t much of a test for the gloves I’ve got although they did well.
