ParticipantAre these a good deal for a “spare” wheelset?
$250

http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10053_10052_507094_-1Dismal may have a more informed opinion, but it certainly looks like a good deal. Decent weight and 27mm deep should be reasonably stiff. I think those Vuelta wheelset are decent (e.g. Novatec/Kinlin grade), probably just budget a little extra to have the wheel tension checked after a few hundred miles.

ParticipantSorry, I don’t know anything good wheelsets. My knowledge of internet sales is limited to good experiences with purchases of complete bikes from Nashbar and BikesDirect.

ParticipantWith all the chatter about having a spare wheelset with knobby tires mounted for the slippery winter, I thought it might be a good deal for some. Maybe I’ll ask vvill what he did, because I know he went that route.

I bought a light CX specific wheelset for all these CX races I’m doing this year
and then I put cheap/durable 35/32mm city tires on the stock wheelset on my Jake. I don’t actually ride on knobbies for commutes much any more unless I’m being lazy or know I’ll be on the C&O for a bit.
For my road bike I have 25mm Gatorskins for winter but I find myself hauling it out less and less often for commutes given the amount of roadwork going on on my route (and I ran over two wire coathangers this morning in separate locations). My hybrid-converted-to-SS takes up to 700/32c so I have the stock wheelset from that too.
Personally for $250 + tax/oversize shipping charges I would be tempted to look around a little more (especially since Nashbar’s “sales” are fairly constant). I think I paid ~$300 new for my Neuvation R28SLs, which is my “climbing” wheelset (~1500g) – generally well reviewed online although it appears Neuvation no longer make them. I have no complaints other than the soft hub shell (my cassette dug into it quite a bit over time).
For a standard 700c winter wheelset (as opposed to a lighter “performance” wheelset) I’d probably look to get something overbuilt, second hand and cheap. For ~$300 you can probably even get a half-decent hybrid with 700c wheels you could swap.

Remembering that I got a Deore LX front 26″ wheel from Phoenix Bikes for $25, that might be the way to go for something that fits all three of your criteria.

I put this here because, well, just because. And it has a fully chromed front fork!

ParticipantNot that I have room, money, or time for it, but I immediately saw the potential in this bike ^^^^^^^^
for a nice tweed ride/city bike. Nice head tube badge, too. Mustache or albatross bars w/ leather grips or twine, a Brooks B67, a 1x?? setup using an IGH in the back, and some other little changes, etc., I’d wanna make. If only I were rich, had lots of storage space for a bike, and a lot more time on my hands, I would definitely look into this as a potential project bike. And it’s my size.November 5, 2013 at 9:14 pm #985291dasgeh

With the right adapter for the valves, yes. That parts list doesn’t include it, though.
Edit: I meant if you have presta valves. It is probably a schrader valve that comes with the pump.

Thanks for the heads up. Took this opportunity to finally pick up a RoadID bracelet, which I’ve been meaning to do for a couple years… and saved $5!
