It seems fair, I think that’s about what my dentist charges for special teeth profiles.

ParticipantA really, really good deal this weekend on Performance.com bike shorts. They’re on sale plus and extra 25% off.

Anyone have a particular pair that they’d recommend? I’ve been using the Novara Padded undershorts and want to try the real bike short thing (with some tasteful athletic shorts on top of course).

I’d avoid “gel” anything. Also, I much prefer bibs over shorts…no waistband to cut into your gut, no worries over exposing your crack, and they have a slimming effect for those of us with extra girth. The Performance Ultra bibs were my gateway drug, although I eventually stopped wearing them because I lost weight and they were too big. My only complaint is that I found the chamois a bit abrasive after a couple hours in the saddle. But they’re perfectly good for commuting and short workout rides.

I’ve been very pleased with both the shorts and bib versions of the Performance Bike Ultra.

ParticipantWhen I first jumped on board the padded (road) short thing I ended up getting some “liner” style shorts that are made to wear underneath other shorts to begin with, and I still wear those for commutes or short rides. After that, since I had no idea which brands, etc. I’d prefer, I just bought 3 pairs of cheap shorts on Nashbar, one LG, one Sugoi and one… something else I forget. The total was only $100 or so. I formed preferences after riding those for a while and also branched out to some more expensive brands (Castelli, Voler, etc.). I also bought some in M and some in S to figure out my size but even the ones I don’t like as much are fine for commuting a couple years later.

Same here on two counts – they were my first pair of bibs, although I still wear (padded chamois) shorts for most commutes, and I also find they get more abrasive than other pairs I own, after a couple hours. Possibly a fit issue though since I bought a M and I usually buy S.

ParticipantMy only issue with the Performance Ultra shorts is that they are on the shorter side (maybe an inch shorter than PI?). Also I have noticed stitching starting to come undone underneath, so durability may be an issue. But hard to beat the price/value there. The leg grippers are very comfortable.
Pearl Izumi Attack shorts probably remain the standard benchmark in my mind. They are durable, comfortable, and relatively affordable (non-bib shorts can often be found for $50 online). I have not found the PI liners to be very good, so I just wear shorts under winter tights.
I have more shorts than bibs, but agree that bibs are a bit nicer since they don’t risk sagging down when drenched with sweat. It’s not a huge deal, though, and definitely bathroom breaks are more interesting with bibs.
