Like the bike I got when I was about 10, now residing in my parents’ garage, which is an internal hub three speed with no shifter/cable.

Point taken. Ouch. Do stop with the sharp objects. I used to have a mountain bike like that. It had about 1/4 of the speeds as it should have.
