I bought my new commuter from him. It needed new tires and saddle and some brake adjustment and a new chain (soon). I made a spreadsheet with the bike cost $115 and a parts list. I think I’ll be able to keep it under $400 which was my goal, thinking that I could get a low level sirrus for about that new. Yeah, I’m paying a bit for the fun of tinkering, but can you put a price on learning?
Oh, so the guy, yeah I think he gets a lot of auction bikes and sells the ones he can fix quickly and cheaply. Most bikes he has outside the storage shed are priced in the $200-$300 range and aimed at the cheap weekend warrior. My take is that he weighs his time against any potential dollar return. So make yourself a spreadsheet, get some info from bikepedia and figure out what it would cost in dollars and time to fix up. Plan for the worst and you’ll be right on target
