Others may recognize this quite quickly. Amazingly, it was my first time here in my years of riding.
I ride across that bridge at least twice per day! (And the right handed 180 switchback at the end going into Park Fairfax is the bane of my existence!)

Yeah, that’s a tight switchback on the Alexandria side. Not as bad as Alpe d’Crystal along 4MR, but still pretty tight. Since it’s a permanent piece of infrastructure, it’s unfortunate. But I tried to give it a pass as it’s of a different era. I like to think if that were (re)built today, it would be a lot more user friendly.

I knew this looked remarkably familiar, but since they built the underpass, I’ve only crossed it a few times, and I had to look at the answer to recall.
It’s probably gotten lonely. It used to be part of the Arlington Loop, but now it’s just used by some peds coming from the east side of 395 to get to Shirlington.

ParticipantBefore the Shirlington connector was built, it used to be the only way (or at least the most practical way) of doing the Arlington Loop.
Edit: I guess I am as old as, but not as quick as, a ‘very senior member’

It was part of my Arlington loop yesterday morning, which eschewed part of 4MR and the trailhead of the W&OD in favor of a little hill climbing in Alexandria near home to start out my ride.

The new connector was only completed in 2009, which isn’t all that long ago. Funny how it seems like it’s always been there now.
If you are really old, you will recall riding the Arlington Loop with dangerous grade crossings at the airport. Those bridges were opened on April 29, 2000.September 23, 2014 at 3:52 pm #1010471mstone

My first ten speed roughly coincided with the opening of the overpass over the Parkway by Roosevelt Island (87? 88?) which made the “Arlington” loop possible.
(“scare quotes” because one not only had to cross in Alexandria at the Martha Custis 395 overpass, but also between Mt Vernon/Arlington Ridge and Rt 1 for the good ol’ Wayne F Anderson Bikeway. which back in the day was in much much better shape than the stretch of the 4mr trail then existing along South Glebe. Now, not so much.)

That it is. We live pretty close to this on the Seminary Road side, so we’re really glad this finally happened, opening up the western side of Holmes Run Creek, and the trail to us. It also gives us a family-bikeable route to Columbia Pike within shooting distance to the Harris Teeter / Starbucks / Subway. However, last time I was down that way the Holmes Run Trail up toward Columbia Pike was under construction.
