From my attempt at lengthening my commute to Tysons.

Somewhere in the Cavalier Trail Park regions, along the Falls Church “city bike route”? My other guess is that this is somewhere west of Gallows – here, maybe?
How much did you lengthen and how was it?

Yep!

Yep!
It depends on my time. If I have time, I will (leave from my home in Falls Church and) go east to Lee Hwy and then all the way out west to Maple Ave in Vienna to add miles before I turn north to Tysons. Along the way I realized I could avoid Gallows by riding past Navy Federal. After a route that literally had me riding around NFCU (I am sure they have a video of me doing this and they are currently investigating me), I found the right trail. I go W&OD, through the woods, cross Follin, continue through the woods, through the Catholic Church parking lot, neighborhood, Wolf Trap, Lord Fairfax, Old Courthouse, Aline. While Gallows isn’t bad, as you know, I struggle to get clipped in after the mid-hill stop climbing up to Idylwood and the busses irritate/frighten me.

Awesome. I’ve puttered about in that park a couple of times when I used to live in Vienna, but haven’t been there in ages. I’m going to try that tomorrow morning.
It takes a rear-view mirror for me to get over my Gallows anxiety – maybe that’d work for you? With buses, at least, I can see their flashers going off, and that tells me whether to slow down and wait or stomp and get the hell out of the way. The downside is that when I’m on a bike sans rear-view, it’s pretty unsettling.

It’s good that they kind of put it back together. They were doing construction around it for a while and it was really torn up. It isn’t lovely, but it is better than it was. I hope the Time Capsule is still intact.
Thanks for reminding me of this.

I like the fish parking spot where the Fillmore Park Trail (Is that the official name? I’ll try to get it added in Google MapMaker) crosses 1st Rd N/Cleveland St as shown here: http://goo.gl/maps/qZm5G
Even fish need a place to park sometimes.

ParticipantEasy one.
Rather underutilized bit of DC bike infrastructure.

Great observation. The sculpture is “Wonder Wander” by Larry Kirkland.

It was a really lovely day for a ride. I had a quick trip that took me through Fairfax, Prince William, and Loudoun–including a brief gravel stretch. As far as I know, it’s the closest-in fully signed County gravel road, with good cell coverage and everything. It’s actually a peaceful trip, much nicer than the adjacent paved roads, so I don’t know why vultures were circling overhead.
I don’t think I ever posted a followup on this one. It’s Bull Run Post Office Road — long name for a little road, and I never did find the post office — which is gravel for a mile or so where it meets Braddock Road.
The spot I consider the most woo-hoo-hoo in Fairfax is on Braddock itself just east of BRPOR, between Tre Towers and Chandley Farm. Every time I go eastbound around that weird curve I’m amazed to find out I’m still alive. (It’s an uncambered turn on a downhill slope with no sightline and no bailout. Go too fast and you’ll end up in oncoming traffic or on the pavement, go too slow and you’ll get run over. Good times. I’d love to know the politics that prevents the commonwealth from simply straightening the road, or even how it got that way in the first place.)

Ah yes, I know that area well. “Dead mans curve” or “rock hill” is what you are referring to. I’ve seen several accidents there, tractor trailers and buses getting stuck. Fun times. There’s a decent trail around pleasant valley golf course for mountain biking that is nearby. Half paved though.
