I scoped out the boardwalk that is being built to replace the current detour on the 4-Mile Run trail at the south end of Eads St., where Dominion is working on the substation.
This looks very nice. Not sure when it will be officially open.
Looks so much better than the W Glebe temporary pedestrian/bike bridge! I didn’t look closely when I rode by today, is the decking a composite or wood?

ParticipantOld Court House Rd NE in Vienna, VA, was repaved and a bike lane added.
Unfortunately the bike lane is only going west – on the downhill side. Also, it is around a blind curve.

This looks very nice. Not sure when it will be officially open. The big fence on the east side has been taken down and workers seemed busy today. This may open up this week!

A slightly grumpy and contrarian comment. Boardwalks (especially those next to bodies of water) can be slipperier than frozen whale snot in the winter when frost forms. By their very nature they will be the first to freeze over. IMHO, we need fewer boardwalks on bike paths.
Case in point, on the CCT this morning, the concrete bridge at Dalecarlia was fine, but the boardwalk was frosty. BTW, why pay for a concrete deck bridge, and then “feed” it with an el-cheapo boardwalk?? A cheap and cheerful solution that has other downsides, including high long-term maintenance costs and short life cycles.

ParticipantI snuck through last night. Looked like about 25% of the railing remaining to be installed. There’s currently a gap between the trail and the bridge which you can see in Steve’s second picture. On the north end, the connection to the bridge hasn’t been build yet. There’s a bit of a gap and elevation change still. As far as detours go, this looks pretty nice. It’s very wide. Looking forward to this opening since the current detour is in pretty rough shape. The asphalt patches installed in the tree boxes on Route 1 have all sunk significantly.

Keep in mind that this is temporary. Once the substation project is complete, this will be removed and the original 4MR paved pathway will return to service. I’m not sure I’d expect them to build a concrete deck on a temporary detour.
And surprisingly, based on personal experience, frozen whale snot is actually kind of sticky.

ParticipantThe ramps to the temporary bride on Four Mile Run have been paved. It looked like about a quarter of the railing was still remaining installation. The bridge has caution tape up at the moment. Didn’t see anything that would prevent opening once the rest of the railing is up.
The thought occurred to me today that instead of building a temporary boardwalk that it would have been cool to build out the enbankement and realign the trail here to remove the sharp curve and reduce the grade at the intersection with the ramp to Route 1. I seem to recall Steve O trying to get the County to expand the scope when this piece of 4MR trail was rebuilt to move 20 feet east and improve this intersection.

ParticipantBridge on Lake Accotink Trail
I realized today that the thread I began under Trail Conditions regarding part of Lake Accotink Trail being closed, now fits better under the Good News on Infrastructure feed. I’m sharing the link to the thread here.

It seems that many of the decisions were made years ago. I asked about keeping the pier that the power pole closest to the shore as a scenic platform and was told that the State Utilities Commission had directed Dominion to remove it. I was also thinking that the boardwalk could be a trail separation where peds could look at the water and maybe fish and not be on the trail. Dominion said that the boardwalk has to come down so they can remove the overhead wires. I’m going to have to think on that a bit.

ParticipantThe railings are nearly finished on one side of the temporary bridge along the Four Mile Run Trail at the power substation.

ParticipantGot an update from Alexandria City government concerning the lack of apparent progress on the Holmes Run Trail bridge behind 4600 Duke St (https://www.google.com/maps/@38.8096865,-77.1117276,3a,15y,283.83h,87.2t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s3czyQ8Xvh5ckpvqYCr411w!2e0!7i16384!8i8192)
Bottom line is newest estimate is “late fall 2023”
The city issued a contract for the 4600 Duke St. bridge replacement and associated outfall stream bank stabilization in late December 2022. Following award of the contract, it was determined, due to current market conditions (supply chain issues & material availability), the lead time for the fabrication of the bridge is now 30 to 40 weeks as compared to the usual 16 weeks.
The construction for the associated outfall stream bank stabilization and infrastructure to receive the bridge will begin this month, February 2023, and weather permitting, will continue for up to five months (June/July).
Therefore, due to the delay in the fabrication of the bridge, we are anticipating a late fall 2023 completion. We will receive monthly updates on the status of the bridge fabrication timeline. We are hopeful the fabrication time may improve as the year progresses which could shorten the completion of the project.

Thanks, it’s good to know. Would you happen to have updates about part of Holmes Run Trail under I-395?
