Note it would NOT mean a new MVT entrance in FFX – it would connect via that long bridge side path that runs from Rte 1 in the County to Washington Street in the City.

ParticipantI am pleased as punch about the new SB bike lane on 7th Street SW, from Eye Street to Maine. I had heard years ago that something like this was coming with the new development (the building at the corner of 7th and Eye, not the Wharf) but when that building was finished and I saw only a sharrows NB on 7th, I guessed DDOT had given up. The new lane is actually striped (with dashes) through the 7th and Eye intersection from the Eye Street WB lane, which is not a treatment I recall seeing around here. It was always an awkward semi-vehicular left, and one of the pain points remaining on my commute.
And a little bird tells me that a NB lane will be appearing soon on the same block.

I try to be the “happy warrior” of bike advocacy. Though there is a lot in the way of that. Sigh. Nextdoor. Sigh.
Anyway, the NB lane on 7th from Maine to Eye SW is now done, and looking good.

ParticipantNew contraflow bike lanes have been added to 8th Street NW between Aspen St. and Juniper St./Eastern Ave. This street parallels Georgia Avenue and to discourage through traffic, the street is one-way northbound from Elder St. to Juniper St. and one-way southbound from Elder St. to Aspen St. There had been signs posted at some (but not all) of the intersections indicating that contraflow biking was allowed, but the new lane markings have been added in the last few weeks.

ParticipantOkay haven’t posted to this thread much lately – situation in Alexandria too all around frustrating, and don’t want to take away from the rightful anger of my DC advocate friends about the pace of change in DC
But – I had the opportunity to ride the new PBLs near Audi Field the other day, and came away suitably impressed, especially with the one on 2nd Street SW. Real protection, no loss of visibility, and even what looked like a floating bus stop. The advantage of doing something in a “from scratch” neighborhood with no NIMBY’s.

ParticipantConstruction of Amazon’s first 2 dedicated office buildings will result in the construction of protected bike lanes on the west side of Eads from 12th St to 15th St, on 15th Street (both sides) from Elm to Route 1 and will include Virginia’s first full protected intersection. Protection will be either poured curbs or modular curbs; bus islands will be used to eliminate bus/bike conflicts.

ParticipantOn the Rock Creek Trail, the worst of the buckled pavement between the cemetery and the Mass Ave bridge has been removed and repaved last week. With the further postponement of the Rock Creek Trail rehabilitation project, this is a long-awaited intermediate step.
The Rock Creek Park Multi-Use Trail Rehabilitation and Pedestrian Bridge Project held a pre-bid meeting on April 29, 2019. The bid opening was held on May 20, 2019, and the bids received were too high. As a result, the District Office of Contracting and Procurement (OCP) canceled the advertisement for bidding on the construction project. DDOT is in the process of reanalyzing the cost estimate and obligating funds. The project will be readvertised in the Fall of 2019.

ParticipantNo photos because it was very dark, but Arlington has done some spot improvements where the Arlington Blvd Trail pops out by the Days Inn / Pershing and they’re very nice. The curb cut into the access road from the trail is now full trail width and the little trail that connects to the Pershing intersection is wide, smooth and unobstructed by bushes. It appears to be the improvement that were outlined here except no plastic bollards yet.

ParticipantNice design of bike racks installed at the NE corner of the recently renovated Oakland Park near Virginia Square metro station in Arlington. I’m glad they put these in because a while back they removed a Capital Bikeshare station on the South side (Wilson Blvd) of the park.

Hopefully they can keep the trail open during construction. A detour along Sunset Hills is not going to be fun.

ParticipantI doubt they would keep it open. Sunset Hills RD has a sidewalk on one side, and it’s not the W&OD side, which makes it harder for some. So it means using the road for one block, and on the next block there is a parking lot/service road that takes you to the rest of the W&OD. See this map link.
