The Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building at UMCP
Jeong H. Kim received the first Ph.D. in reliability engineering from the University of Maryland in 1991, and is now a professor of practice in the Clark School of Engineering. Kim has been widely recognized for his achievements. In 2005, shortly after being appointed president of Lucent’s Bell Labs unit, he was named one of the Top 10 Most Influential Asian Americans in Business. He has been inducted into the National Academy of Engineering and sits on a number of corporate, university, and non-profit boards. An entrepreneur as well as an engineer, Kim founded Yurie Systems, where he pioneered the development of a revolutionary asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch for wireless applications. The ATM switch became a pivotal key in the modernization of telecommunications systems for today’s digital market. In 2004, he was inducted into the Clark School’s Innovation Hall of Fame.
This is the side entrance, the front of the building is more impressive, but it was blocked off for construction.February 15, 2021 at 6:28 pm #1111986consularriderParticipantManhattan Center for Science and Mathematics. This historic Pump House was the City of Rockville’s first public water system and supplier of electricity for street lights and private homes. The Pump House is most infamous for a faulty well which resulted in a typhoid fever outbreak during the winter of 1913-1914. The Mayor and City Council then took measures to establish a state-of-the-art sewage system to prevent another outbreak.

The Pump House is now used as a community center. It has a cute birdhouse that is a miniature version of the building.February 19, 2021 at 10:38 pm #1112077bikedavidParticipantThe National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine building in Chinatown. Apparently the National Academy of Sciences was formed first and then later Engineering and then Medicine to provide objective policy advice. This building houses the National Academies Press bookstore for all three Academies on the right and also has sphere on top which I think represents GPS or satellites circling the globe.

I suppose if you can build anything for the gate then it might as well be a castle!

The Edmonston Storm Water Pump Station is located in the town of Edmonston, Md., in Prince George’s County. For years, the existing pump station had been unable to keep up with high-intensity storm flows reaching the station’s retention pond and transfer them to the Anacostia River. As a result, nearby homes and properties had been subjected to flooding caused by pond overflow.
Following severe flooding in 2004, the Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) commenced the Edmonston Storm Water Pump Station improvements project. The station upgrade included three new Archimedes screw pumps, each 46 ft long and 10 ft in diameter and capable of pumping 133 cu ft of water per second.

Science, Technology, Engineering & Math are all important in running an airport.
The College Park Airport (KCGS) was established in 1909 after Wilbur Wright came to the field to train two military officers to fly in the government’s first aeroplane. The facility is now the world’s oldest continually operated airport, and is the site of many significant aviation firsts. College Park Airport, known as the “Field of Firsts,” remains an active airport serving the needs of aircraft pilots, and is also a site for history buffs and aviation enthusiasts.
The airport was purchased by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) in 1973 and operates as one of the gateway airports to Washington, DC and Prince George’s County. They have a 2,600’ x 60’ runway and offer both tenant aircraft parking and transient aircraft parking. There is aircraft parking for more than 100 planes, fueling services, weather briefing capabilities, and a pilot lounge. Located just steps away from the College Park Metro Station which provides easy access to Washington, DC and surrounding areas. On the field is a historic hangar where the first airmail operations were based and is home currently to the Prince George’s County Police – Special Operations Division.
