Participant2/8/21 – the word “Japanese” on a sign
On February 8, 1885, the first government-approved Japanese immigrants arrived in Hawaii as contract laborers for the sugarcane and pineapple plantations. With them they brought their culture, traditions, and food.
On your ride, capture the word “Japanese” on a sign in your photo.
Happy hunting!

2/6/21 – Ice Cream or Frozen Yogurt
Just a few stores down at Westover from yesterday’s clock tower is Toby’s Ice Cream. Years ago this location was a bakery, then it became an ice cream shop called “Scoops Beauregard” (as some FS participants well know), then eventually it became Toby’s.
Toby is a long time friend of ours! (Fun fact – he used to mountain bike with us!)
We love his UBE ice cream. Ube is a purple yam (popular in the Philippines and SE Asian countries).
Will definitely have to plan a ride down to visit!February 8, 2021 at 12:54 am #1111214JoM

I’ve never had rolled ice cream before, so that’s what we got!
It is definitely fun to watch them make it! Tell Kate I said “Hi!”

2/6/21 – ice cream & selfie
I couldn’t fit the name of the place into my selfie – I coulda taken the pic from the street, but I’m frankly not that comfortable leaning my bike against a wall and going that far from it. Nevermind the Arlington crime rate – I’m just not doing it. You can see the awning with the name of the place if you scroll up a bit to Accordioneur’s picture. Or lookit my Strava post from today – it’s a quax, too. [emoji16]
Nadine, there were no rules about having the name of the location in the selfie! Definitely, keep your bike close and ice cream cold! If you see Toby, tell him I said Hi!

Except the sign isn’t legible here…. It is in my Strava pic though, which I think is the same pic. (Is it possible pix show up blurrier here than on Strava?)
Nadine, I posted a picture of the same owl, including a link to a video about it, in case anyone wants to know more about it.

I couldn’t think about any nearby owls and with the bad weather I wasn’t willing to travel too far to search. Anyway, I found this lovely owl at my local Lowe’s. He looked nice and cozy in his perch in the store with the snow was falling outside.

Participant2/8/21 – the word “Japanese” on a sign
I thought I knew exactly where to go for this one. Satsuma is my favorite sushi restaurant, although since the pandemic I’ve been getting it only by delivery. Numerous online photos showed it having a big sign above the door saying, “Satsuma Japanese Restaurant.” And unlike several of my other destinations in this scavenger hunt, I knew for a fact that it was still open.So I went there. And what is above the door now says just “Satsuma.” I can even see where the letters that said “Japanese Restaurant” were attached. But the letters themselves are gone.
Fortunately, it turned out Hinata Sushi Carry Out was only a few blocks away. And while there was no “Japanese” in the name, it does have a sign for its Japanese groceries.
