Although Reston has many resident owls, including a pair that often hangs out in my neighborhood, pursuing them didn’t seem like a good way to get a bike ride in today – it’s more of a hiking type of thing. Instead I biked to a local bird feeder store (closed on Sunday) and peered in the window. Success!

2/7 Superb Owl Sunday

I have to admit I didn’t ride today – I have a little trouble getting motivated to ride on damp days when I have no reason to leave the house. But I think I deserve at least 1/4 point for my prescience in having photographed a superb owl on yesterday’s ride. This is one of several works in Arlington by local chainsaw artist Andrew Mallon.

Superb Owl

Owls Cove Rd in Reston – best I could come up with today. I rode down all the little side streets off of several of the roads in south Reston that border on the Nature Center, hoping to see one of the Barred Owls that hang out there. No such luck today, but it took me into some local neighborhoods I’ve never visited before. And the roads weren’t as gritty as the main roads which had been very thoroughly treated with rock salt the size of marbles.

2/7/21 – superb owl

Here’s a lovely tree carved owl atop Sena’s totem in the playground at Oak Park, across from WL high school! I’d forgotten about it but found it in my pictures.

I’d found it a few weeks ago on a tree carving ride I’d found on ridewithgps.com… so I talked Anne into riding there with me today, & took a today pic with my bike & the totem placard so you all can see the story behind it.

Except the sign isn’t legible here…. It is in my Strava pic though, which I think is the same pic. (Is it possible pix show up blurrier here than on Strava?)
