ParticipantI thought for a while about this, wanting to do something different. There’s a street called “Rosedown” near us, but I didn’t want to do yet another street sign. Plus Ride W/GPS always pronounces it “Ross-uh-don” which was funny at first but not anymore.
Then I remembered I needed to stop in World Market for Valentine’s treats to send my kids and what do they have there but MAPS? And what do good maps have? A compass ROSE.
And then I said to myself, “If Rosa Parks wasn’t a compass helping direct the path we should follow, I’m not sure who was.”
So here it is, Compass ROSE.

So, suited up to visit a high school friend who moved off Split Rock Road in Boonton, NJ (big scenes in the Sopranos). Split Rock is a little mountain kind of road, up up then down down. I was totally worried about finding any writing much less specific words because I was biking the valley toward Kinnelon. I looked up from the driveway and out of the heavens a rose appeared on the street. I’m taking it!

This is actually roses or rosas, depending on whether you’re speaking English or Spanish.Today was the first time in a long while that Freezing Saddles/the scavenger hunt wasn’t the main reason for my trip. I was biking to a rental car so I could drive to Glen Burnie for my COVID vaccine.
But that meant I was exactly the wrong end of town for all the roses I could think of (Pike and Rose, Rose Avenue, or Montrose Road). And it had already been a long day (up early, vaccine, and finding that someone had stolen my Fly 6). So I didn’t really feel like doing more riding.
Then I suddenly remembered that downtown has lots of florists. So I biked to the nearest one, Bethesda Florist. Unfortunately, while there were many other flowers out, there were no roses.
I was contemplating what to do next when an employee came out and asked if she could help. I responded, “This is really weird, but I need to take a picture of some roses.” She said, “I’m working on some right now. I’ll bring them out to you.” She did, and put them down where I could get a nice close up of them.
After I thanked her and started to leave, she said, “Good luck with whatever it is you’re doing!” Yep, with all this, she had never bothered to ask.

I went with “Rosa Parks” to make it even more official! I go by this school at the end of most of my rides, so I didn’t have to think very hard about this one. Yay!

Didn’t find the elusive Rosa on my routes today….or actual roses, so I had to stick with the plain ‘ol Rose Garden sign.

Very nice! So sorry about your Fly6. That’s an expensive loss! Glad you got your vaccine though!

Civil rights hero Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913. Because she defiantly refused to move to the back of that bus many years ago, her action has improved all of our lives.
On your ride, find either a “rose” or “Rosa”, snap a pic, and post it in this thread.
Happy hunting!

Rosedown Dr in Reston. Couldn’t find any explanation of why this name was given to this street. There is a historic site owned by the State of Louisiana and is one of the most intact and documented examples of a plantation complex in the US south. It serves as a rich source for studies of slavery. Not clear that the street name has anything to do with the plantation but I couldn’t find any other information when I googled “Rosedown.”Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Found lots of roses in Alexandria, but then found this faded rose on a rose bush. The rose and its bush is in the St.Paul’s Cemetery off of Wilkes Street. Don’t despair, the rose bush has new growth, spring is near.

Rosemary Lane in Falls Church
On my way back from riding up and down Rosemary Ln a few times, I was reminded that there is also a Rose Place nearby.
But this sign was prettier so I went with it.
