I had a goal in mind, but several slushy, treacherous neighborhood streets later, I decided that the next dog I saw would be “it”. And I saw … FIVE dogs out walking their humans. The girls were delighted for their furry babies to star in a scavenger hunt photo. The dogs were indifferent.

On February 2, 1925, dog mushers arrive in Nome, Alaska riding through unimaginably harsh conditions to complete the Serum Run. It later became the inspiration for the Iditarod Race and later the Iditabike.
On your ride, capture a dog in a photo out in the wild, and post here.
Happy hunting!

However, the regular park did. This dog’s owner was delighted to have her dog contribute to the scavenger hunt.

Many dogs to be found after work, and I decided to ask a woman I’ve frequently seen run past our house with these two beauties if I could take their picture.

This was actually the third dog I saw on my ride. I had planned to go to PetSmart, knowing there were dogs going in and out of there all the time. Then half a block from my house, I saw a man walking his dog, and asked whether I could take a picture of his dog. He asked suspiciously why I wanted it, and I explained it was a scavenger hunt. He was clearly still uncomfortable, so I said, “If it’s a problem, I don’t need to.” He replied, “I’d rather you didn’t.” I didn’t want to force the issue, so I started off again toward PetSmart.A few blocks further on was a park, and there were a couple of people playing fetch with a retriever. I had to run across the park to catch up with them, but they readily allowed me to photograph their dog. The only issue was that the dog wasn’t interested in me, so it took a few tries before I could get a photo where he wasn’t looking away from me.
At that point, I could have gotten my shot with something that wouldn’t even have been a sleaze ride. But I decided that I really should get more exercise than that, so I biked another four miles or so. Then just before I reached my own driveway, I found a woman walking this one. Not only did she agree to having him photographed, but he clearly decided I might have some treats, and looked eagerly at me.
Of course, then my phone shut down, and I thought I had lost all the photographs of him. But it turned out I had lost only two of the three. Here is the remaining one.

I have two observations:
1. What are you doing riding in the daytime? That’s so not you, CV!
2. The looks more like a wolf-dog. I hope you gave him treats. He knows where you live and if he doesn’t, he can just sniff his way there to find you.I’m always entertained by your descriptions of your rides!

I prefer to ride at night. But I didn’t think I’d be likely to find a dog out at night. Lots of dogs in my neighborhood, but strays are rare.
But alas, I didn’t have any treats with me!

I found a #litdoggo whose human had to ask his Mom first if I could take their pic, and then the dog lunged at me. After that, I stopped asking dog walkers for their pics, and just concentrated on staying upright between the black ice and the wind!

Happy panting furry dogs
Painted long bizarro dog
The word “dog”All at the dog park at Alethia Tanner park on the Met Branch Trail. I was reading recently how this relatively new park was named for Alethia Tanner who was born a slave, purchased her freedom in 1910, helped free others, and worked to establish the first school for black children in DC.

Small but important typo — she purchased her freedom in 1810, not 1910.
