EDIT 3/17/21 – FINAL WEEK POST HERE: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?18102-Freezing-Saddles-2021-Daily-Photo-Scavenger-Hunt&p=209861#post209861

I love taking photos, and having a goal usually ups the fun factor, so I’m doing a daily photo scavenger hunt.

Every night, I’ll post something you have to take a picture of the next day (along with the date). I’ll try my best to post before midnight.

It might be an object (a stop sign), a theme (something blue), specific (e.g., a bike laying on the ground), vague (e.g., confusion), a mish-mash of those, or none of those.

Rules:

1. Obvs, you should be a participant in Freezing Saddles ’21
2. It has to be on a bike ride on the day it was requested
3. It has to be posted on the day for which it was requested, i.e., 12:01 AM EST to 11:59 PM EST for the day it was requested. Sorry, I won’t count ones that aren’t posted for the day it was requested. That’s part of the challenge :)
4. The reason I say “for the day it is requested” is because I might do requests a few days ahead of time, but don’t take and/or post the pic until that day comes.
5. It has to be posted here on the forum in this thread
6. There should be text either in the title or in the post with the date and the found object/theme. Another option is to “Reply With Quote” the post with the request, i.e., simply click that button on the bottom right of my request so it is quoted above your picture
7. Description, short backstory or location are optional (but nice). That said, if your pic is abstract or not obviously relatable to my request, please explain (e.g., I ask for “happiness”, and you post a pic of a tennis ball you found on a ride, please explain how that tennis ball = happiness)
8. It has to be a picture you took, so if you’re in it, it either has to be a selfie or done with a self-timer
9. Only one pic/day. Please don’t pad by adding more than one pic/day
10. It has to be a picture, not a video
11. Let’s stick to things you find out there during your ride, and not things that you bring or make yourself (unless otherwise specified). Example 1: if I say find “2021”, don’t scratch it into dirt. Example 2: if I say find a flower, don’t bring a flower with you on your ride and take a pic of that. This kinda takes the fun out of looking for things, which is the whole point. (Rule added on 1/2/21)
12. Unless specified otherwise, your bike does not have to be in the photo. (Rule amended on 1/4/21)
13. Found item needs to be clear and discernible (or legible if text) in the picture. If you are using Tapatalk and are having trouble posting pics that are large enough, let us know and I/we can try to help you with it. (Rule added on 1/3/21)
14. Filters are OK, but no obvious/blatant photoshopping… not that I know anything about such things

Scoring: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kgsAzaLIXN-IJMjscyNnQTNvWEp__VzgGBSkJDYrTfs/edit?usp=sharing

1. If you follow all the rules above, it’s 1 point/picture. I’ll like your pic if I have added the point to the tally sheet.
2. If I feel like you haven’t met all the rules, I’ll give you .25 points for the effort (Added on 1/11/21)
3. I’ll keep a tally with your forum name. I may reach out to you via the forum’s messaging, or ask you to reach out to me in a post in this thread.
4. EDIT ON 3/17/21: THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN ANYMORE -> At the end of FS, every like in each of your pic posts = +1 point. I’ll add these up at the end :D
So for example, your pic has met all the conditions at the top, and has 3 likes. That will add 4 points (1 for the pic +3 for the likes) to your pot.

Notes:

1. Prizes TBD
2. Contest starts 1/1/21 and goes until the last day of FS ’21
3. Some of these will be hard. Fret not, some will be easy, so skip those days that are too difficult
4. Don’t ever ever ever ever do anything that can put you in danger or will result in hurting yourself. I promise I won’t ask for any pics of you riding on the Beltway ;)
5. I might post pics, but mine don’t count in the contest

Alas I could not find a Designer Hanger but I did find “Shared” and/or “Drain” in the same frame…

2/1/21 – the colors Red, Blue, and Yellow in the same picture

On February 1, 1944, Piet Mondrian – regarded as on of the greatest artists of the 20th century – passed away. His painting “Composition with Red Blue and Yellow” was used as the base for one of cycling’s most enduring jerseys: La Vie Claire in the 80s.

On your ride, compose your single snapshot so that you capture all three of the colors that Mondrian eventually limited his palette to: red, blue, and yellow. Just make sure that all three colors are clearly visible. You can use your bike, helmet or clothing on yourself to represent one of the colors. The other two colors must be found in the wild.

Happy hunting! :)

1/31/21 – “Henri Desgrange” subanagram (5-letter or more word, not the object)

I snagged a “Garden” on my quick, snowy ride this evening.

I’ve heard some murmurings of gearing-related bonuses, so of course I did this on my fixed gear (and not because of the road conditions). Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get the word and bike in the same shot, but here’s the bike with the entire sign.

1/31/21 – henri desgrange subanagram

I really wanted “readings.” There was a psychic I was gonna look for a pic of with “readings” in its name…. But then I got on the Jamis with the knobby 33s and remembered I hadn’t tested out the salmon brake pads yet. So…..They slowed the bike down, which was a huge improvement over the previous brake pads, which DIDN’T, when they were wet …. These too work fine when they’re dry.

Sigh…. Not the best brakes for a snow bike. Anyhow I didn’t feel safe riding in the road with it so I settled for something closer.

Garden, again.

I actually took a lot of pictures on this ride. I knew the one I wanted. But the road conditions were iffy enough that I wasn’t sure I was going to make it all the way there and back. So along the way, there were:

* Yellow pedestrian crossing sign, red tail light, and blue recycling bin.
* Red brick house with yellow wood trim and a blue car in front of it.
* Christmas lights in all three colors.
* Suburban Hospital’s COVID testing sign (blue and yellow) and its emergency room sign (red).
* A bus stop with yellow glass on one side, and a red and blue Metro sign with a yellow Ride-On symbol above it.

Fortunately, in the end, I made it to where I wanted to take the photo. So I give you one of the murals in the Bethesda parking garage, which has red, blue, and yellow (and several other colors) in it.

On January 31, 1865, the first organizer of the Tour de France – Henri Desgrange – was born. Using just the letters in his name, find a 5-letter or longer word (not the object) out in the wild. Same rules as usual for these subanagram hunts, the most important being: the word can’t be on something portable like an iPad, phone, or anything you bring yourself from home.

There is a bonus 2 points for this hunt for one person, to be revealed in the attached picture of the first TDF winner, after the day’s hunt is over. A clue is that it is not about finding the longest word.

If you’re in the DC area where it’s forecasted to be inclement weather, PLEASE be careful, and don’t take any risks for this hunt if it’s snowy or icy outside. It’s just 1 point in a long game.

Happy hunting! :)

So don’t leave us hanging–what’s the bonus?

Like cvcalhoun said there were ALOT of choices…one was .25 miles from my house but I chose to find the Columbia flag about 20 miles away!

Wow – you guys had some very clear looking roads and sidewalks! Here in Western Fairfax I was even nervous driving my car over to Falls Church for an errand. After the errand, I needed to go to Target (sister’s bd card) so went to Mosaic. Fortunately, I had my bike and gear in the car “just in case” so I rode way too many stupid laps in the parking garage to get my sleeze miles. And as I finished, I came across this little beauty.

The blue light, the yellow box, and the actual “help” button is red. Darker red, but red nonetheless!

Earlier today I was checking out recent activity on Strava to see what people were doing. I saw crayon-scribble marks over the Mosiac parking garage and I thought, “That’s a great idea. Maybe I can go ride circles in the garage.” But then I continued to hear sets of car tires spinning out on my icy, hilly street in Falls Church and decided just to stay home.

Parking stickers on a car, seen thru a bike frame….there’s something ironic in that I think.
