Picking my best one was tough this time. Most artistic was of the tunnel that extends from the bus bay at Bethesda Metro to the shops on the other side of Wisconsin Avenue (although the homeless guy who was sleeping in the entrance to that one got up and questioned me about why I was taking pictures of the tunnel, and none of my explanations seemed to make any sense to him). But from a sentimental perspective, I had to go with the tunnel that used to connect the Georgetown Branch Trail to the Capital Crescent Trail, but is now just a big construction site.

That is a sad reminder.
Did you really get up and go disturb a homeless guy’s quiet time to do that in the middle of the night? [emoji848][emoji38] I was expecting to the first entry to be coming from Spain.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I tried not to disturb him. But I suspect he wasn’t actually asleep yet. He got up quite quickly and started asking me questions.

A good excuse to go find a real tunnel I had not visited before. The one under the train tracks and Telegraph Rd in Alexandria.
I must say, it was well lit at least. I was wondering what I would find in the dark.

Here’s the Spring Garden Street Tunnel which goes under the Art Museum (it seems ripe for some National Treasure type stuff):
Apparently, the right lane is unused (at least 6 years ago), and I might try and head back down for cooler pictures.

When I was growing up, Manhattanites would derisively refer to those of us in the outer boroughs as “bridge and tunnel people”, since we had to cross a body of water to get to the Edenic island where “real New Yorkers” lived. We outer borough people, in turn, looked down upon those who lived in the faceless suburbs beyond the city line. As to the rest of America, pretty much everyone in the New York metropolitan area knew it to be a pizza-less wasteland made up of sparsely populated prairies and “cities” that wished they were New York, populated by bumpkins of various ilk. All that notwithstanding, New York City, which is a collection of land masses separated by significant bodies of water, did contain a lot of bridges and tunnels.
I no longer consider myself a “bridge and tunnel person”. For one thing, the outer boroughs – parts of Brooklyn in particular – have become some of the hippest hot spots in the city, and it is the Manhattanites who have to cross a bridge or tunnel to get to the coolest parts of the city. For another, I now live in Arlington, where the topography does not call for nearly as many bridges and tunnels. Which leads to a conundrum of where to find a tunnel on my morning ride.
Fortunately, there is a tunnel-rich network hidden in plain sight all around us. Not transportation, but storm water management. Over the years I’ve poked into various storm water tunnels and they really can be impressive. Some are, in fact, big enough to drive a truck through. The one I photographed today is not – but a person with a reasonable BMI could crawl through it.

The Humpback Bridge Tunnel that connects Columbia Island (and Boundary Channel Drive) with the Mount Vernon Trail. There is a parallel tunnel to the east that will one day provide a more direct connection to Boundary Channel Drive and beyond.

1/27/2021 — tunnel. Here’s my bike at the Duke Street Tunnel, a ped/bike tunnel underneath Duke Street in Alexandria that connects the King Street metro station and the Carlyle neighborhood. Artist Mike McConnell created a series of 12 nature-inspired artworks for the recessed areas inside the tunnel, some of which you can see in the photo.

The dreaded Zoo tunnel in Rock Creek Park. This is a part of my daily commute and when I time it right, I will hop on the road heading north (morning rush). I will always hop on the road when I head south.
One of these years the bypass through the zoo will finally reopen. Hopefully construction will start this year

This tunnel goes under the Madrid (Barajas) airport and is about 1.5 miles long. It connects the towns of Paraquellos, Los Baracoles and Cobeña to east side of Madrid! And yes that is a bike lane that goes all the way thru both ways!

In Reston we have numerous underpasses or tunnels, part of the original founder’s vision to connect neighborhoods via pathways rather than roads. Some are decorated (public art) and others are lesser used these days, especially with the kids out of school. This one is close to my house and needs some art love. In the meantime, it’s a good set for a scary home made movie if kids do that anymore!
It’s also a good #FSWormhole

This is the popular and well known Crystal City Connector tunnel. Extremely useful in non-pandemic summers, because passing through takes you to the Crystal City Water Park and Fridays at the Fountain.

My tunnel is not big enough for a human but I bet plenty of squirrels or other critters have made their ways through these “tunnels” that are just waiting to be placed into the ground.
