    1/25/21 – Bubbles

The 20th anniversary of National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day is on 1/25/21:
“Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day was the brainchild of the “Spirit 95” FM radio station in Bloomington, Ind. The first one was held in 2001, and included a Bubble Wrap popping relay, a sculpture contest, and a fashion-design contest.”
(Lifted from CNBC’s article from 2012.)

I figured bubble wrap might be a little hard to find in the wild during a bike ride, so please seek bubbles, capture them in a photo and post here.

    Happy hunting!

1/24/21 – Apple Logo (but not on electronic device)

On January 24, 1984, Apple sells its first Macintosh, which differs from previous computers because it features icons to start programs instead of having to use command lines.

On your ride, take a pic of an Apple logo, but it can’t be on an electronic device (e.g., iPhone, iPad, Macbook, etc.).

    Happy hunting!

In Clinton, MD we don’t have an Apple store or Universities, but I rode around and around and finally spotted a car with the apple logo on it’s bumper.

    Shameless Apple Promo day…Clarendon store.
Scanned all the cars I could along my route today, and never found a sticker on a car :( Good thing I had the store as a backup.

1/25/2021 — bubbles. My bike outside a Bubble Laundromat. Not pictured: the “WTF?” look from the store clerk while I was setting up for the photo.

Set out this morning before dawn to find bubbles! Here you see a huge roll- one of many – of bubble wrap in the local Fedex store, illuminated by my headlight before it lost charge. I’m sure that me peering into this window at o-dark-thirty was not creepy to the beholder at all. :D

    1/25/21 – Bubbles & Bubble Wrap!

Great to learn Nat’l Bubble Wrap day had origins in Bloomington, IN, where I went to grad school. Go Hoosiers!
I found a good variety of bubbles in the dark this morning, and I’m sticking with the original bubble wrap for today’s photo….found while peering into the window of the FedEx in Crystal City.

This sculpture, “Simon” is in Reston and is named for Reston’s founder, Bob Simon. The sculpture is by DeWitt Godfrey, who in an artist talk about the sculpture discussed that it is representative of his study of bubbles and surface tension and how the shape and movement of one bubble affects another. He tries to capture that in steel. The entire sculpture does move, although not enough to be alarming. :-) I like this sculpture but I don’t like where they situated it. It’s very hemmed in by the buildings around with no room to breathe or really be appreciated. I’m sure when they first installed it, they thought it would look good, but with all the construction coming to fruition around it, not so much.

Fish blowing bubbles on the mural by Bruce Scallon. Mural is mounted on the fence hiding the old power plant in North Alexandria from users of the Mount Vernon Trail.
