It’s in a mini park I had no idea existed prior to this!Yes, I assumed Josh’s biggest challenge today was deciding which Ben Franklin tribute to photograph….

Participant1/17/21 – Ben Franklin’s B-Day Lightening Bolt
Some lightening bolts on this UVA vs VT poster at a Citgo west of Staunton.
Luckily, as there wasn’t much commerce/signage on my rural ride today.

1/17/21 – Key, Kite, or Lightning: Actual Thing or Graphic (but not the Words)
On January 17, 1706, Benjamin Franklin was born. One of his most famous experiments is the key on a kite flown in a storm to attract lightning. To honor him, take a pic of a key, a kite, or lightning, but here’s the rub: not the words. It can be the actual thing, or a graphical representation of it. Oh yeah since everyone has keys in their pockets, not that kind either because that’s too easy
Confused? See Mr. Franklin’s reaction to answers below…
Happy hunting!

Participant1/18/21 – #publicartfinder featuring (or by) a BIPOC
Let’s celebrate diversity on Martin Luther King Jr Day by taking a pic on your ride of public art that either features or is by a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People Of Color). It’d be nice if you could let us know the location, and if possible, the artist.
Optionally, post it into Boomer’s #publicartfinder pointless prize as well
Happy hunting!

I figure this thread will shortly be filled with monuments, but a living artist would benefit more by the exposure. Mural artist Juan Pineda installed the mural on the overhang, columns, and one wall of the bus bay area of Bethesda Metro in 2016. Juan was chosen from a talented pool of 50 artists from Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia who applied for the opportunity to create the second installment of “Paint the Town,” an initiative of the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District to bring more public art murals to downtown Bethesda. Description of him from his site:Juan Pineda DC-based visual artist, whose distinct style is also characterized as urban-contemporary/street art. His connection to traditions resulted in unique mural work in Maryland and Washington, D.C. area since the mid 90’s. He received the Proclamation Award from the City of Hyattsville for his mural entitled; “In Memory of Freddy”. In addition to creating original work of art, he also specializes in restoration and preservation of public work. In 2005 & 2014, Pineda was recognized by the “The Washington Post” for restoring the last and only remaining outdoor Latino mural in the Nation’s Capital entitled; “A People without Murals is a Demuralized People” -1977. In 2016, he partnered with Bethesda Arts & Entertainment and Arts Brookfield to embellish the Bethesda Metro Center. Pineda consults and volunteers with various causes that are related to art and culture. Pineda continues to create art in all mediums and categories including private and commercial.

Gotta love the supervillain! Mural is at 5th & Cecil B. Moore Ave (who himself was a civil rights activist who forced the integration of Girard College), and the artist is @busta.art (according to a Reddit comment). I think he’s of Nukak-Makú (a Colombian indigenous people) descent based on some of his work. -
