    1/11/2021: Plane

Planes abound in College Park, MD, because we are the home to the oldest continually operating airport in the world. It was was established in August 1909 by the United States Army Signal Corps to serve as a training location for Wilbur Wright to instruct two military officers to fly in the government’s first airplane. You can find out more information here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_Park_Airport

For my photo I chose to take a picture of one of these simple silhouettes painted on the pavement of the nearby bike trail – which happens to be part of the Anacostia tributary trail system and thus REALLY accessible to any bicyclist in the DC area. How cool is that? :) Anyway, there are a series of these silhouettes which help to lead the curious hiker/biker to the airport and the connected museum.

I used to love that part of the Cider Ride. It was easy to get distracted!

You need to go to an airport to take a flight on an airplane. Here is a Reagan National Airport highway sign on I-66 as seen from the Custis Trail.

I’ve tallied up to 1/10/21. If your score seems off, please send me a PM and let me know what you think the issue is.

    A few notes:

    1. For scoring, instead of giving a 0 for not meeting all the rules, I’m giving .25 points for making an effort. I’ve changed previous 0s to .25
    2. The two biggest things that folks are getting dinged on are too many pics (only 1/day) or not including the date and the found object (or “Replying with Quote” my request for that day). Please know that it’s not punitive, it’s just so that I can keep track of things more easily on this completely manual scoring system :)
    3. Another thing I dinged for were people bringing things from home. I can’t always tell if a snack bar was bought during the ride or brought from home so I’ll give the benefit of the doubt, but a quick release nut was most likely brought from home ;)

Thanks everyone for playing! Still a lot of days left! 😎

Also, has anyone else had the experience that the next day after a particular subject is the challenge, you see them everywhere? Today I saw bells all over the place!

    1/12/21 – Bat

This was the hardest one yet. There used to be a tree by a nearby school in which bats would roost, and they’d fly back and forth between there and the chimney to the school. But when I went to look today, the tree had been chopped down, and there was no sign of bats flying around the chimney.

I also looked for stores around Bethesda with BAT in the name. There is one. But it doesn’t have a sign on the outside of it.

I thought of sporting goods stores. But I’m not going into any stores right now, and there was no way to determine which ones might have a display of bats in the window.

I checked the nearest baseball field, hoping someone had left a bat around, but no such luck. And I feared that no baseball games would be played during the day, at least during nonworking hours.

I took a picture of a Maryland War of 1812 license plate (which depicts a BATtle), but that seemed to be stretching things.

So I started a forlorn search around the neighborhood. Baseball bats in someone’s yard? Bat decorations left over from Halloween? Sign for someone’s bat mitzvah? Even a birdBATh? No luck. I checked every sign, license plate, utility pole I passed for the letters BAT, with no success.

And then finally, I found it. A Little Free Library. With several children’s books inside it. One of which had a picture of a bat.

And then my phone shut down before I could take a picture. Apparently, its battery doesn’t like the cold. Fortunately, having learned my lesson after the incident with the coffee shop, I had brought my portable charger and got the phone running again, so I was able to take the picture.

Of course, after all that, my brake cable snapped just as I arrived home. But I’ve contacted a repair service to come by this afternoon. And meanwhile, I have my bat.

Here’s the Negro Leagues Memorial — it’s located by the field a number of teams, including the Philadelphia Stars, played at during the 30s and 40s. The player’s holding a baseball bat.

Agreed on the quick release nut and learned my lesson. :)
