1/8/21 – Bell (but not on a bike) OR an Elvis
January 8 is Elvis Presley’s birthday. What were at the bottom of his jumpsuits? Bells! Post a pic of a bell that isn’t on a bike OR an Elvis you spot on your ride (just 1 pic please). Happy hunting!
Josh – the only acceptable answer from you (and only you) is the Liberty Bell since you left us to go to Philly
Bell – 1/8/2021

On January 9, 1793: “Blanchard made the first balloon flight in North America, on January 9, 1793, when he ascended from the Washington Prison Yard in Philadelphia and landed in Gloucester county, New Jersey. This flight, observed by President George Washington, spurred interest in ballooning in the United States.”

I was lucky enough to get to ride with the Bike Burke Group this morning including several Saddle Freezers. This is me taking a picture (with my bike in it) of Cathy Miller taking a picture (with her bike in it) of a balloon on a Remax real estate sign.

Taylor’s Tavern; Professor Lowe’s Balloons (Falls Church, VA)
The first aerial reconnaissance in American military history took place here, with a balloon filled with gas from Washington Gas Company.

I was chatting with some friends as we rode down Route 1 in Maryland this morning, hoping that we might pass a mural with a balloon somewhere along the way to Alexandria, VA. Suddenly, right there in Hyattsville, I remembered that there is an awesome mural of kids playing with water balloons. It’s a pity that the mural is not visible unless you enter a tiny parking lot and walk into the alley between two buildings. It truly is a hidden gem.
Here is the story behind this mural: New Hyattsville Mural Counters Negative Images of Young Black Men https://www.hyattsvillewire.com/2020/09/15/hyattsville-mural-water-balloon-dance/
