This bell is outside the firehouse at the corner of Wilson Blvd & George Mason Dr. – right beside the Bluemont Junction Trail.

Everyone loves a good lizard story, right? Every year on July 4th there’s a ceremony wherein they ring this bell. Back about ten years ago, when we had just gotten our pet lizard Cooper, we decided to attend the ceremony and bring him with us. Our previous lizards had been bearded dragons, which are very mellow and tend to sit still. We weren’t used to uromastyx, which are much squirmier and also like to hide in any cave-like area they can find. On the drive over, Cooper squirmed out of my wife’s hands and crawled deep under the passenger seat, where the was no way we could reach him, and there was nothing we could do to entice or prod him to come out. I actually wound up unbolting the seat and picking it up so that we could extract the darn lizard.

These bells are in the tower at St. John Neumann Catholic Church right next to my house. True story: When we first bought this house I was outside talking to a neighbor one day when the bells began ringing. I exclaimed, “Oh, they’re wonderful!” The neighbor scrunched up her face and said, “You may think so but there was a lawsuit because people thought they were too loud and too much!” I find that so sad after living in Europe where church bells are ubiquitous. I wonder how those people would feel with a Muslim call to prayer 5 times a day?

1/8/21 – Bell – I passed about 10 churches on my short 1 mile BikeShare ride, and no bells. Just as I was about to return the bike, I discovered this gem on the side of a building.

One of the lovely corners in my hometown of Takoma Park, named after the founder of the city’s Recreation Department, Belle Ziegler [emoji3590] Belle passed away from cancer in 2008; the park was dedicated in 2010. Thank you Belle!

Pretty much any photo editing program has a function called “rotate” that allows you to move the photo so that it’s upright.

It’s a little more than that, it looks like vbulletin does (or at least did) funky stuff with their image uploads. Well, they claim it’s a feature not a bug 😎

For me, when I had a photo I’d taken in portrait (on my Android phone) orientation, I’m pretty sure I had to rotate it three or four times (I know, it doesn’t make sense) 90 degrees and re-upload until the orientation (as displayed on the forums) was correct. It certainly wasn’t intuitive.
