Participant3/17/21 – Rainbow, Leprechaun, or 4-Leaf Clover
On St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated on March 17 every year, you have a mission to capture in a photo one of the below:
- a Rainbow (which will lead you to a pot of gold), or
- a Leprechaun (who owns that pot of gold), or
- a 4-leaf clover (where each leaf stands for: faith, hope, love, and luck).
Fun fact I forgot about after leaving elementary school: you’re supposed to wear green on St Patrick’s day because leprechauns like to pinch people, but they can’t see green, so it makes you invisible to them.
Fun fact I just learned: “It wasn’t until 1798, the year of the Irish Rebellion, that the color green became officially associated with the day, Casey says. Up until the rebellion, the color associated with St. Patrick was blue, as it was featured both in the royal court and on ancient Irish flags.” – https://time.com/4261456/st-patrick-day-2016-history-real-saint/
Happy hunting!

3/16/21 – Panda or Danger Panda
The #dangerpanda is a lot easier than the first time I tried it maybe 3 years back. I actually couldn’t ride with no hands until about the same time, and I figured it’d be a good skill to have.
I wanted to get a panda in the shot as well, but my planned targets had their names high up on the storefront which doesn’t play nicely with #dangerpanda rules. Maybe I should’ve went for the footless variants, but I think I should probably practice those first. I love and miss Pete Beers, and we should all go for a bike ride!

Considering how often I ride without hands, I was surprised at how challenging it was to actually pull off the danger panda so you could see all the requirements! Happy panda day, now go check out my friend’s panda art at Pandinko (https://www.facebook.com/105251751358503)

This was tougher than anticipated. The florist that had huge displays for other holidays had skipped straight ahead to Easter without pausing at St. Patrick’s Day. Two different party stores had no St. Patrick’s Day items, at least that I could see from the window. And of course, a lot of bars are closed due to the pandemic. However, I finally found Caddie’s on Cordell. They had a patio in front of the place, and had outdoor seating under a canopy. I peeked inside, and saw a leprechaun and two shamrocks. And I realized that in the middle of the night, it was unlikely anyone was going to stop me from bringing my bike onto the patio and taking a picture. So…

3/17/2021 — rainbow, leprechaun, or four-leaf clover. This house on Oak Street in Alexandria had the trifecta. Happy St. Paddy’s Day, everyone!

Photo through the door at Best Buns in Shirlington. I didn’t go inside because there seemed to be some complex protocol required to actually get inside the shop.
Tip o’ the hat to Casey, who pointed out to me that Best Buns had these decorations.
It occurred to me as I posted this that the picture shows run of the mill shamrocks, not four leaf clover. I suppose the easiest thing to have done would have been to do a quick bike ride over to a store with holiday decorations, but instead I did an extra credit project.

I went a bit out of my way through a neighborhood and was rewarded with this house that was all decked out to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day including a festive painted mailbox!

All that AND a unicorn! I’d say that’s a magical trifecta!

I noticed this guy yesterday in Herndon and went back for the photo today. This is the house that puts out skeletons for almost every holiday and goes absolutely NUTS at Halloween.

I often wonder what the people in China who are making all this stuff must think Americans are “really” like…lol

Good fortune smiled on me, as I found a leprechaun, next to a shamrock (aka clover) on Thayer Avenue in Alexandria. The owner of the home told me his next display will include the Easter bunny.
