3/13/21 – Black Cat, Ladder, or Umbrella

National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day – celebrated on March 13 since 2003 – was created in the hope to defy superstitions by having people doing just that and seeing that nothing bad will happen (hopefully!) :)

On your ride, find one of these three items/words that are associated with good/bad luck:

1. Black cat – may have started during medieval times when animals with dark feathers or fur signaled death
2. Ladder – walking under a ladder is considered bad luck because you are breaking up the holy Trinity (God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit)
3. Umbrella – may have started in ancient Egypt because opening an umbrella where there is no sun would anger the sun god Ra because it was a defiance of natural order

Happy hunting!

I snapped this pic of a photoshoot in Rittenhouse Square. It’s not a traditional umbrella, but it’d protect you from the rain.

3/14/21 – Scientist (Name or Likeness)

I know it’s Pi day, but we already did pie. Besides, now that it’s ok to like scientists again, let’s join in Celebrate Scientists Day, which happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday of March 14.

On your ride, find a scientist’s name or likeness out in the wild, and snap a pic of it. It’d also be cool if you could mention at least one scientific contribution they gave to the world.

Happy hunting!

I resisted the temptation just to go get breakfast at Einstein Bagels, and went for something that was actually named after Albert Einstein. Einstein, as we all know, came up with the equation E=MC2, which has something to do with time travel (except that it doesn’t).

I deleted. Hope the picture meets the requirements. Finding this on a phone is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Too bad the email links don’t actually go to the posts.

I went with the obvious choice and the giant Albert Einstein statue outside the National Academy of Science.

Einstein’s Theory of Relativity is the backbone for one of my favorite “lesser known” Queen tracks from A Night at the Opera – ’39 (and what sort of time travel it allows).

Great list of names on their Biowalk of Fame, but I’ll highlight Dr. Charles Drew; Arlington, VA, native, who discovered how to separate plasma from red blood cells, and from whom I now have 2 degrees of separation thanks to my FS teammate Catedrew who is his great-niece! Thanks to Dr. Drew for his life work and highest regards to his whole family [emoji471]
