3/10/21 – Cell Phone Store OR Wired Phone OR Pay Phone (read details for breakdown)

A local convenience store has two pay phones out front. However, I’m honestly not sure how convenient a pay phone is these days.

It’s wired and has a coin slot visible (near the top right), so this is a three pointer.

    Re: Payphones

I would love to know where in NoVa/MoCo/PGCo/DC people found actual pay phones — just for perspective. They are definitely difficult to find. If you found one (and are in the local jurisdiction), would you mind saying where? I know Serdar and I did Gravelly Point (total props to him)

I found two in Mt Pleasant, just a block apart after nothing for a few miles of cruising around Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, and 14th Street

3/10/21 — a cell phone store was the best I could muster, alas:

If only you had known. The two I found were next to the Wafle House, which would have not been far out of your way atall.

    3/10/21 pay phone!

On the way to Fort Hunt. I was dressed colorfully today so my ride buddy took a pic of me in front of this payphone on the MVT

Unfortunately Josh reminded me I’m supposed to have taken the pic myself. I could totally have taken a selfie, but I forgot that rule. So since it’s not necessary for me to appear in this pic, I’m swapping it out for a pic of the bike & phone. I was careful to make sure the coin slot was visible so it’d be a 3 pointer….. Good thing a coupla people have quoted my original post, so the colorful pic will live on in their reposts. [emoji2358][emoji1744]

Mine was at Cabin John Ice Rink. I was also able to confirm that there is a (nonworking) one at the Dragon City Chinese takeout in Silver Spring. And in a Reddit thread, someone said there was one just inside the door at Mazza Gallerie. However, I wasn’t able to reach Mazza Gallerie (they don’t answer their phone), so I couldn’t verify that.

Fascinating — where on the MVT? (I confess I’m spending way too much time thinking about why the remaining pay phones are in the locations they are …)

    Definitely hard to find.
I found one next to La Union restaurant on Wilson Blvd in Arlington (pictured here in forum).
Also found one at Westover Market (Wash Blvd in Arlington).

    3/11/21 – Face (using Pareidolia)

On March 11, 1950, Bobby McFerrin – famous for the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” – was born. Fun fact, this song was the first a cappella song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

So I was originally going to ask you to find a happy face, but that seems meh. To up it a notch and hopefully make it more fun, on your ride, find a face using pareidolia:
The tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern

    A few rules:

    1. Describe what you are seeing
    2. Don’t use an actual face
    3. It has to be outside
    4. It can’t be of or on a phone

    Happy hunting!

Couldn’t find a payphone so a cell phone store will have to do!

It’s hard to tell, but I’m pointing to a T-mobile store in my neighborhood here. #flyby6238d1be8c79fc2c6b3c7d82ab73917c.jpg

3/10/21 – Well, I HAD to find a pay phone. And as others have noted, they are very hard to find! I saw a Verizon pay phone ‘booth’ at a gas station, but when I got there, I discovered that the phone had been removed, leaving it’s imprint on the booth wall. I finally found one at the Liberty Gas Station on Glebe Road in Arlington, just north of Route 50. I can’t guarantee that it works, but you can see the coin slot!

On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the first successful phone call, which was to his assistant Thomas Watson, who was in the next room. According to his notebook entry, Bell recounts his utterance of the famous words:
Mr. Watson – Come here – I want to see you“— as well as his reaction when his assistant arrived: “To my delight he came and declared that he had heard and understood what I said.”

On your ride find one of the three below:

    1. For 1 point – find a cell phone store, or
    2. For 2 points – take a picture of a wired phone (caveat, it can’t be your own phone or at your own home), or
    3. For 3 points – take a picture of a wired pay phone. It must have a coin or credit card slot clearly visible.

    Happy hunting!

On the mvt just past Alexandria Avenue, out on the way to fort hunt. There’s also one a bit further south in a parking lot in between fort hunt & mt Vernon just off the trail.
