    3/3 – Train

One of our daughter’s favorite “destination” parks when we first moved to DC is at 11th and Monroe, featuring a train playground. The park used to be a turnaround for streetcars that ran on 11th Street, and was turned into a park when the streetcar was discontinued. The park was renovated about a decade ago.

I grabbed a couple of shots with just my bike and the tracks and trestle just in case I missed the train, but I eventually caught the VRE Crossing Rolling Road in Burke. I was also treated to a sighting of both birds of the nesting pair of eagles in Lake Accotink Park!

    3/3/2021 Train

When I learned that I would be looking for a train today I knew I wanted to go the the Fairfax Station Historic Rail Road Museum. The original Fairfax Station (1851 depot) was predominantly constructed by the hands of Irish immigrants, many recruited not long after reaching the United States. Most settled in the Fairfax Station area. This influx of Catholics also led to the construction of St. Mary’s Church, located about one-quarter mile from the train station. Fairfax Station played an integral role in the Civil War and served the community of Fairfax for over 100 years. With the progression of transportation throughout the early to mid-1900s, the Southern Railway began closing smaller stations along its line. Fairfax Station, the last original operating train station in Fairfax County, closed in 1973. The depot remains in use today as a museum. While there is a rail car on site I really like their sign with the cutouts. The light was perfect today to see the detail in the sign.

It was somewhat difficult to capture a moving train in the dark.

Here is my picture of an automotive tractor with one or more trailer units.

PS. Please let me know if you won’t give me credit for this. I also have a bogus “train” picture that does not meet the rules of this days hunt. I know that more than one picture is a no-no.

Alan, this meets definition 1.b. You are good to go!

Like many others, I went with a shot of MetroRail, in this case, a westbound Orange Line train, which will soon no longer be stopping at East Falls Church as that station is slated for closure as WMATA cuts costs due to the Pandemic downturn:-/dfc05f1e2769b65bebf8c096bcae0925.jpg

This is the neighborhood sign down the street from me, representing the Penrose station that used to be one of the trains stops and what our neighborhood is named for.

Well I have my favorite pic of the metro train coming towards me, taken from the Patrick Henry overpass…. But there are other pix of metro trains here, and none of the Bluemont Caboose, which I thought was my backup plan….. Also Accordioneur was just leaving the custis overpass when I was arriving [emoji38] so I’m sure his pic will be along shortly….

But I like the moving pic better have the still museum piece train so…. This is my favorite. Taken from the Patrick Henry Overpass on my way back from the Custis overpass [emoji16] (The others are on my Strava ride from today of anyone wants to see….)

Which is why everyone needs to answer the Metro survey with a big “DO NOT CLOSE THE STATIONS!!!” And get your supervisor and other elected officials involved.
