3/3/2021 — train. This mural by Chad Brady is on the side of Cheesetique in Del Ray. It honors the old Potomac Yard railway linking Alexandria to Washington, D.C. as well as the St. Asaph Racetrack.

The best part about standing on a bridge over I-66 awaiting a train photo of the Metro is seeing all the people in cars that are inbound … and not moving.

PS. Please let me know if you won’t give me credit for this. I also have a bogus “train” picture that does not meet the rules of this days hunt. I know that more than one picture is a no-no.

On March 3, 1938, the Mallard steam locomotive was built. Exactly 4 months later, it set the world speed record of 126mph.
On your ride, capture a train and post your one photo here on the forum.
Happy hunting!

This one was tough only because it couldn’t be done at my usual midnight, since the trains now have such abbreviated hours. My original plan was to slip out during working hours and get the MARC train at Garrett Park. Unfortunately, I had one of those days when I got a message saying, “When are you available this afternoon, because we want to try to schedule a meeting sometime this afternoon.” It never got scheduled, but just slipping out in time for one of the MARC trains (which don’t run as frequently as Metro) wasn’t going to work. So I biked to a Metro station (White Flint) that would allow me to see a train from outside the station, as opposed to actually having to pay the fare just to take a picture. As you can see, I ended up peering through a fence to get the photo, but I did manage to get some of my bike into the picture.

These are a bunch of SEPTA trains in the rail yard, wishing they had the golden hour lighting the buildings did.

I looked up the local MARC schedule and even poked my nose into an area that’s sometimes used as a train yard near Anacostia Riverwalk Park, but in the end I thought that it would be cool to highlight another mural in the Lakeland area of College Park. All the way to the left is a train. The left side of the mural is supposed to represent Lakeland as it is today, the right side of the mural (not currently pictured) features historic images of Lakeland.
