Participant3/2/21 – Little Free Library (with your bike in the pic!)
In 2009, President Obama proclaimed March 2 as Read Across America Day.
In celebration of the day, snap a picture of one of those happy little boxes of knowledge and intrigue known as a Little Free Library, and post it here on the forum. For this hunt, make sure your bike is also in the picture.
Happy hunting!

P.S. – for those playing OUTSIDE of the U.S. that don’t have good access to a Little Free Library, take a pic of a cool looking library, but make sure that you have your bike in the pic

I got the trifecta: Two picture of pigs (one on the door, one in the woman’s hair), the word “pig,” and a barbecue place: Honey Pig in Rockville. As for the quality of the place, it’s good enough so my son’s bachelor party was there. (It was a nontraditional bachelor party; Honey Pig’s services don’t include strippers.)

3/1/2021 — pig or BBQ joint. I stopped by Pork Barrel BBQ in Del Ray for scavenger-hunt and quaxing points, even though I actually prefer the other BBQ restaurant in this local restaurant group (Sweet Fire Donna’s). There’s a cute pig in Pork Barrel BBQ’s logo, although now that I think about it, the fact that the pig is holding a fork seems somewhat cannibalistic.

The pig outlasted the restaurant! The Dixie Pig Bar-B-Q restaurant closed in the late 1990s, but the sign survived. Now Vaso’s, a Greek restaurant occupies the space on Powhatan Street in Alexandria.
Mystery solved! I always wondered why this Greek restaurant had a BBQ sign. Now I know. Thanks, CaseyKane50!

Federalist Pig in Adams Morgan. Unfortunately it was closed today but they have a great pig mural inside as well as BBQ!

National Pig Day has been celebrated on March 1 since 1972, when it was started by two sisters, one of who said the purpose of the day is “to accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place” as one of the most intelligent domesticated animals: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Pig_Day
On your ride, find a pig, whether it be the word or a likeness …orrrr… you can go the opposite way and find a BBQ joint that serves pork (preferably one you’d recommend). This brings up one thing that I always thought was funny: why do some restaurants have a cheery icon of the animal you are about to eat (e.g. Hot N Juicy or Pollo Campero)? Have those animals not watched Soylent Green or Cloud Atlas?
Happy hunting!

3/2/2021 — Little Free Library. Here’s my bike at branch # 91486, on Myrtle St. in Alexandria. Kudos to the “librarians” for taking the time to decorate the library with cute animal-themed wallpaper.

You’re only about 22km away from an official Little Free Library (charter #3700)! We all know that’s nothing compared to your typical ride distance this BAFS. You’d better hope drevil’s not too much of a stickler for his own rules.

Participant3/2/2021 — Little Free Library
I had actually found this one the night I was looking for a Beetle. It was not on the Little Free Library’s directory. However, I went and photographed it, since I already knew where it was. That wasn’t even a sleaze ride, so I started looking for others. I found one using the Little Free Library’s directory. There was another one in the directory, which I swear I had seen quite recently, but it wasn’t there today. In the end, I decided to use this one, because it more or less matched the color of my panniers.Ironically, while searching for Little Free Libraries today, I found a VW Beetle. It would have been a perfect one, too, because it was actually painted to look like the insect kind of beetle–all red with black spots.

The little free library outside of my local elementary school. I peeked in there and it is half full of books.
