Participant3/1/21 – Pig or BBQ Joint
National Pig Day has been celebrated on March 1 since 1972, when it was started by two sisters, one of who said the purpose of the day is “to accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place” as one of the most intelligent domesticated animals: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Pig_Day
On your ride, find a pig, whether it be the word or a likeness …orrrr… you can go the opposite way and find a BBQ joint that serves pork (preferably one you’d recommend). This brings up one thing that I always thought was funny: why do some restaurants have a cheery icon of the animal you are about to eat (e.g. Hot N Juicy or Pollo Campero)? Have those animals not watched Soylent Green or Cloud Atlas?
Happy hunting!

My cousin recommended this place but it was closed. It was easy enough to get there but my luck ran out when I hit rain all the way home

The pig outlasted the restaurant! The Dixie Pig Bar-B-Q restaurant closed in the late 1990s, but the sign survived. Now Vaso’s, a Greek restaurant occupies the space on Powhatan Street in Alexandria.

Just realized that I forgot to post this last night, after riding in the rain, getting a flat tire, and my Garmin died … it was a rough night, indeed … but hopeful that the Scavenger Gods will grant me leniency with my delayed submission [emoji1374]

My riding partner (Lefty Laura) and I biked to two different BBQ joints today, one in Reston and one in Herndon. Neither had any pig images so we settled for BBQ restaurant signs and started working our way back home. When we were within 2 miles of our respective homes Laura called out, “PIGS!”. And sure enough, one porch held two pigs, so we each got a very satisfying photo.

“The Man Slopping Pigs” by Richard Beyer (uncle of current Congressmen Don Beyer Jr), a cast-aluminum statue installed in 1984 in front of Don Beyer Volvo store in Falls Church, VA.
The Beyer brothers, Richard and Don Sr, grew up on Springhill Farm in McLean, where their mother, Clara, kept pigs, so a portion of the story surrounding the statue goes.
