Participant2/27/21 Black or White on a sign
I figured White House Black Market was going to get a lot of free advertising here today. In fact, I made the trip to Old Town part of my ride as well.
I was hoping to serendipitously find B&W elsewhere, and I was thinking of places that might have B&W in print. I lucked out when peeking into a FedEx shop, so sharing that sign instead.[ATTACH=CONFIG]24562[/ATTACH]

After an interminable Saturday meeting, broke free at 3 and rode to Reston Town Center to take an insurance photo of the same clothing store that others have. That done, I started exploring. I remembered a yard sign that had one of the words and I was hoping it would have an additional sign to complete the pair. No joy, so I rode back to Lake Anne, Reston’s historic center and peeked into the used book shop. SCORE! Couldn’t bring my bike in (there’s barely room enough for people in there), but was able to get this photo … only to realize it’s sideways. Ah well, the words are clear. Thanks drevil for stretching my brain a bit.

That’s a great book – I read it after I saw/heard James McBride speak at the national book festival. Nice find for today’s photo.

Participant2/27/21 – the words black or white (or better yet, both) in any language
I went to the Hall’s Hill Wall in Arlington. Some of the wall is still there behind the sign. It’s visible in the pano on my Strava post today – but I used the closer pic for this to make sure the words are legible. Except somehow they’re kinda blurry, here. [emoji848][emoji1744]
The beginning of the sign reads:
This wall is a reminder of racial segregado if the historically African American community of Hall’s Hill. During constructing of the Woodland subdivision in the 1930s, a wall of various materials and heights was built here to separate the BLACKs from the adjacent WHITE neighborhood…..
(I can’t figure out how to do BOLD here so using CAPs instead.)
Glad to see I’m not the only one who went for a racial equality pic for today’s photo. [emoji3590][emoji1377][emoji1434][emoji1548]Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Found a bar in the most picturesque town about 25 miles south!

As a backup plan I was thinking of a restaurant menu with moros y cristianos for black beans and white rice. I wonder if they have it on the menu. [emoji57]

While in Rockville getting my Civil War sign, I spotted this one close by. What luck! My fallback was a street sign with “white” in it.
This is a story about black and white educators and a court case. I didn’t get the entire sign since I was focused in on the “black and white”[ATTACH=CONFIG]24560[/ATTACH]
Nice one! Gibbs was one of those cases that helped set the stage for equal pay as well as a foundation for other extensions of equal rights. Thurgood Marshall was his lawyer and the case was eventually settled before ascending to the heights of precedent. But it helped Marshall work towards the end of segregation of schools. You can read more about it here: https://www.mymcmedia.org/black-history-month-mcm-spotlights-justice-thurgood-marshalls-rockville-roots/

On February 27, 1981, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder started recording Ebony and Ivory. Fun fact: while Billboard magazine ranked it #59 of the Hot 100 songs of all-time, Blender magazine named it the tenth worst song of all time.
On your ride, find the word “black” or “white” on a sign. If you capture both words in one snapshot, you’ll get 2 points.
Happy hunting!

Ok, I couldn’t get them on the same sign. There was a “Black Lives Matter” banner a block west of the Hall, but too far to show up in the same photo.

I guess that’s emblematic of systemic racism. So the closest I came was with my two riding partners for today, one on a black bike, and the other on a white bike.
