    BLM on the MBT

I assume that’s Black Lives Matter on the Metropolitan Branch Trail, and not the Bureau of Land Management tagging the path.

My son lives out west and in his job regularly deals with the Bureau of Land Management, so when Black Lives Matter started gaining traction as BLM, I kept having to make the mental jump to context. Similar to when everyone started using DMV for this area. I was still stuck on that slow and infuriating experience trying to get anything done connected with licenses and autos. :-)

    DISTILLERS:

DIS: Distributed Interactive Simulation – A military simulation technology for connecting remote simulations together to form large exercises. We were in essence inventing Internet gaming – I even had some articles on how to synchronize multiple players over the Internet published in Game Developer Magazine back in the 90’s

IST: The Institute for Simulation and training. The Army funded a lot of the DIS work out of Orlando. The University of Central Florida set up IST, an academic research center to support simulation research.

STI: Stanford Telecommunications, Inc. A firm I worked with back in those early days.

TIL: Today I Learned that STI went out of business a long time ago.

ILL: Internet Leased Lines. Back in those days, plain vanilla Internet connections weren’t fast enough for realtime simulation, so we used leased T1 lines.

LLE: Low Level Emulation. One of the first simulations I wrote was in the Lisp language on the Symbolics computer. Later, it was possible to emulate a Symbolics on a Mac and we ported the simulation over to that platform. The original MacIvory was a hardware board that you added to the Mac, so only partial emulation.

LER: Learning Environments Research. IST did a lot of research in how to build synthetic environments that best support learning.

ERS: Economic Research Service. I’m pretty sure we pitched this organization that they should be using (our) simulation technology to improve their analyses. Never got a contract out of it.

STI also stands for sexually transmitted infection. That’s what it meant in MY former life. [emoji16] (I was an AIDS/Health educator 88-03.)

There’s a group of cyclists who ride out of the Green Lizard who go by “STD’s”…swim team dads. They have jerseys proclaiming STD in BIG letters.

ERO – The Electronic Return Originator (ERO) is the Authorized IRS e-file Provider who originates the electronic submission of a return to the IRS. The ERO is usually the first point of contact for most taxpayers filing a return using IRS e-file.2b7824b6803049fdb1ec4d96bdf5447f.jpg

2/27/21 – the words “Black” and/or “White” (any language)

On February 27, 1981, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder started recording Ebony and Ivory. Fun fact: while Billboard magazine ranked it #59 of the Hot 100 songs of all-time, Blender magazine named it the tenth worst song of all time. :D

On your ride, find the word “black” or “white” on a sign. If you capture both words in one snapshot, you’ll get 2 points.

    Happy hunting!

Who else here had a subscription to Blender? I really miss that. I’m pretty sure I still have all the old issues!

The only issue on this was timing. The store was inside a mall, and was open 11:00 to 7:00. My son and his family were coming over at 11:30, and likely staying past 7:00. And I wasn’t at all sure that I could get back from the mall by 11:30 if I got there at 11:00.

And then I realized that while the store wasn’t open until 11:00, the mall was open at 10:00. And since I only needed to take a picture, I could get there at 10:00, take the picture, and get back before 11:30.

No bike in this one, since I didn’t have the nerve to take it into an enclosed mall.

And yet again, I am thankful for the vaccine, which enabled me to go into a mall–albeit an uncrowded one first thing in the morning, wearing an N95.

No sneaking around in a mall for this photo. The store is located on King Street in Alexandria. If SteveO looks carefully, he can see my bike in the reflection.
