EDIT 3/17/21 – FINAL WEEK POST HERE: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?18102-Freezing-Saddles-2021-Daily-Photo-Scavenger-Hunt&p=209861#post209861

I love taking photos, and having a goal usually ups the fun factor, so I’m doing a daily photo scavenger hunt.

Every night, I’ll post something you have to take a picture of the next day (along with the date). I’ll try my best to post before midnight.

It might be an object (a stop sign), a theme (something blue), specific (e.g., a bike laying on the ground), vague (e.g., confusion), a mish-mash of those, or none of those.

    Rules:

    1. Obvs, you should be a participant in Freezing Saddles ’21
    2. It has to be on a bike ride on the day it was requested
    3. It has to be posted on the day for which it was requested, i.e., 12:01 AM EST to 11:59 PM EST for the day it was requested. Sorry, I won’t count ones that aren’t posted for the day it was requested. That’s part of the challenge :)
    4. The reason I say “for the day it is requested” is because I might do requests a few days ahead of time, but don’t take and/or post the pic until that day comes.
    5. It has to be posted here on the forum in this thread
    6. There should be text either in the title or in the post with the date and the found object/theme. Another option is to “Reply With Quote” the post with the request, i.e., simply click that button on the bottom right of my request so it is quoted above your picture
    7. Description, short backstory or location are optional (but nice). That said, if your pic is abstract or not obviously relatable to my request, please explain (e.g., I ask for “happiness”, and you post a pic of a tennis ball you found on a ride, please explain how that tennis ball = happiness)
    8. It has to be a picture you took, so if you’re in it, it either has to be a selfie or done with a self-timer
    9. Only one pic/day. Please don’t pad by adding more than one pic/day
    10. It has to be a picture, not a video
    11. Let’s stick to things you find out there during your ride, and not things that you bring or make yourself (unless otherwise specified). Example 1: if I say find “2021”, don’t scratch it into dirt. Example 2: if I say find a flower, don’t bring a flower with you on your ride and take a pic of that. This kinda takes the fun out of looking for things, which is the whole point. (Rule added on 1/2/21)
    12. Unless specified otherwise, your bike does not have to be in the photo. (Rule amended on 1/4/21)
    13. Found item needs to be clear and discernible (or legible if text) in the picture. If you are using Tapatalk and are having trouble posting pics that are large enough, let us know and I/we can try to help you with it. (Rule added on 1/3/21)
    14. Filters are OK, but no obvious/blatant photoshopping… not that I know anything about such things

    Scoring: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kgsAzaLIXN-IJMjscyNnQTNvWEp__VzgGBSkJDYrTfs/edit?usp=sharing

    1. If you follow all the rules above, it’s 1 point/picture. I’ll like your pic if I have added the point to the tally sheet.
    2. If I feel like you haven’t met all the rules, I’ll give you .25 points for the effort (Added on 1/11/21)
    3. I’ll keep a tally with your forum name. I may reach out to you via the forum’s messaging, or ask you to reach out to me in a post in this thread.
    4. EDIT ON 3/17/21: THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN ANYMORE -> At the end of FS, every like in each of your pic posts = +1 point. I’ll add these up at the end :D
So for example, your pic has met all the conditions at the top, and has 3 likes. That will add 4 points (1 for the pic +3 for the likes) to your pot.

    Notes:

    1. Prizes TBD
    2. Contest starts 1/1/21 and goes until the last day of FS ’21
    3. Some of these will be hard. Fret not, some will be easy, so skip those days that are too difficult
    4. Don’t ever ever ever ever do anything that can put you in danger or will result in hurting yourself. I promise I won’t ask for any pics of you riding on the Beltway ;)
    5. I might post pics, but mine don’t count in the contest

    2/25/21 – Duck

So many ducks off the MVT, but sooo far away! This little guy, though, came in for a close-up!

On February 25, 1970, “Rubber Duckie” premiered on Sesame Street when Ernie sang the song while taking a bath. Fun fact:
“The segment was so popular that the song was issued as a single with the show’s theme song as the flip side. In September, it peaked at #16 on the Hot 100, and on November 16, it once again appeared on Sesame Street, this time in a Season 2 segment again with Ernie performing the song.”

On your ride, capture a likeness of a duck, whether it be an actual duck, an image, or made of rubber. Caveat is that it can’t be your own duck.

    Happy hunting!

I went to a local kid’s store, DoddleHopper, in town and had no idea of how hard it was to find a duck! Tons of unicorns, Pokemon, fairies, insects, dragons, bunnies, horses, magic ponies … animals of various sorts (including the seclusion owl [emoji1657]!), but no ducks.

Dejected, I was on my way out the door, and lo and behold, on the rack, there was the elusive ducky. Score!;-)

This was an easy one for people who live/ride in Reston. But I had to be in Loudoun County today, not Reston, so I decided to look there. Thirty miles later I had seen deer, mockingbirds, cardinals, WAY too many Canada geese, and even a groundhog, but no ducks. So I finished my ride and came back to Reston to embark on a second ride. As Karen posted earlier, we have a piece of public art in Reston called “Duck, Duck, Goose” that are supposed to be functional art – artistic bike racks. I was part of the committee that commissioned these pieces and lesson learned — ensure you write into the contract that the commissioning body has the authority to make the installers re-do it. The guy who installed it (not the artist) put it on a grassy area that gets muddy, pretty far away from the tennis courts or the lake house nearby, and set it up like a Mama being followed by her babies. So … It’s goose, duck, duck. And they won’t change it. sigh

I saw Karen riding away from it, so I knew it would be a duplicate, so I looked in Reston for other ducks as well. Sadly, ducks have fallen out of fashion. Probably due to Moby-Duck (story here: https://www.npr.org/2011/03/29/134923863/moby-duck-when-28-800-bath-toys-are-lost-at-sea)

I also wanted to add this…when I was a kid my dad was stationed in Japan. I spent 6-8th grade living on a base that did not have cable TV. The only TV we had in English was Sesame Street and Soul Train. When my mother was in the room, we watched Sesame Street to show what good caregivers we were with my younger brother. When she left, we switched over to the master, Don Cornelius, and danced. During this time, I learned EVERY Sesame Street song (and we even had the record albumn). So today, Ernie’s “Rubber Ducky” song was my earworm, followed closely by Oscar the Grouch singing, “I Love Trash!” If we ever get a happy hour, I will be happy to sing both of these for those of you who missed this rich cultural experience.

Calling to the ducks did not make them come closer. It didn’t help that there were other people trying to take pictures of the ducks. Photo taken on the MVT trail just south of the Washington Sailing Marina.

Ducks, easy peezy so many lakes in Reston easy, easy, not. Each lake I went to was empty of ducks and geese and everything. I did find a white thing that may have been a duck, or may have been a seagull, but so far in the distance it would’ve been an undramatic picture. At lunch there was the suggestion that frying pan park had ducks. The quest for a two for a park and a pic was very intriguing so I went for it. Not only did I find a duck but a duck with a Roman bath.

    And. Just for clarification:
“Duck is the common name for numerous species in the waterfowl family Anatidae which also includes swans and geese.”

And, on that note. There are geese up the wazoo where I ride. These were nice enough to be right along the side of the road, so it made for an easy picture.

    You missed the next sentence:

    wikipedia wrote:
Ducks are divided among several subfamilies in the family Anatidae; they do not represent a monophyletic group (the group of all descendants of a single common ancestral species) but a form taxon, since swans and geese are not considered ducks

While on my way to Reston’s Duck, Duck, Goose public art/bike rack feature at Lake Newport my eye caught this “billboard” on Wiehle Avenue.

On my way back from WTFCC this morning I kept my eyes open and sure enough, a few ducks were feeding at Sparrow Pond (the little wetlands around mile 2 of the W&OD). I figured that if I didn’t see any real ducks along the way I would head to Duck Donuts, but my sighting of these mallards meant no donuts for me.
