Even though it was not required, I was disappointed my bicycle was not in the picture. This mosaic, by Stevan and Mila Stanisic, is inside while my bicycle was outside.

2/23/21 – National Tile Day Mosaic

I didn’t get out today until after dark, but peeked at this thread first to see how everyone was solving today’s challenge as my creative bent was at a low ebb. And I saw that many had the bright idea of stained glass windows in Churches! Well my hometown in JRZ has as many churches as it does bars, so off I went to visit the Baptists, Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Jewish Synagogue, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and numerous other denominations of one sort or another, all of which are within eyesight of one another in the downtown area creating a target rich environment to solve today’s challenge! But alas, like many others found out, the lights are off inside the churches’/temple’s inner sanctums so there was no back lighting to be found anywhere to highlight the art mosaic windows. Then I remembered that in my hometown, all of the original street sign posts were made of concrete with embedded tiles indicating the streets’ name.

“The very unique Cranford street signs with the name spelled out in tiles were first installed in 1929. Many of the original sign posts with blue letters on yellow tile remain today throughout town. “

    2/23 – Mosaic!
I no longer regularly pass near Mosaic District in Merrifield, so I decided to get a picture of a dolphin statue at a local gas station that happens to be covered in a lovely MOSAIC of pebbles.

Also happy that this was literally 10 feet off my normal commute.

I took the same photos as DCAKen and LhasaCM! I also snapped a few of the mosaics at the Franciscan Monastery and wondered if the top of the Basilica at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception would count as a mosaic. But here I’ll feature another one of the mosaic bean benches by local artist Valerie Theberge. Her work is getting a lot of play in this thread!

A couple years ago my daughter and I attended a workshop with the artist, hosted by Dance Place. We got to use some of her mosaic scrap pieces to decorate a frame around a small mirror–a fun project!

The sign states that the bean benches were funded by a grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

Shawn, are there any actual mosaics in the mosaic district? I’m headed there tomorrow for a different reason, and would love to see some new mosaics if there area any. Also — where is this dolphin? It’s a rare and wonderful find!

I’ve biked there several times, but I cannot recall actually seeing any mosaics. No guarantee either way on that one.

The dolphin is one of the decorations at a gas station here in West Springfield. Unfortunately, it’s right on a slip lane so most people miss it.

While heading for a church, I turned onto an unseen patch of ice on the road and the wheels of my bike slid out from under me, causing me to crash. I lost the use of both brakes in the crash–both released, and the wire came out of the anchor bolt on one of them. I can only conclude that churches are hazardous to bicycles.

Hope that you are alright Carol.

On February 23, celebrate National Tile Day by seeking and taking a snapshot of a mosaic – a picture or pattern produced by arranging together small colored pieces of hard material, such as stone, tile, or glass.

The word “mosaic” is also acceptable, but I think it’s safe to say that we the horde prefer the art :)

    Happy hunting!

I’m fine, other than a few bruises. I did hit my head. But I figure that since I managed to make yet another vaccine appointment for someone this morning, my mental functioning is unimpaired. ;)

Dang, did it again! I ride late and just forgot to post as soon as I got home.

So, for a place so proud of the name – it’s posted everywhere – I could only find faux mosaics.

Were you able to fix the brake. Still feeling okay in general?

Yep. I always carry tools with me. So I fixed the wire back into the anchor bolt, reconnected the brakes, and biked home (avoiding the road where I had crashed). My elbow is a bit sore, but all in all, I’m doing fine.

The word “Hacienda” in Spanish means Tax Authorties…every town has an office.
