Returned from the Manassas LOVE ride and rode to the birdhouse forest before flute tooting. I didn’t even realize I also capturing the mosaic wall in the distance. What a glorious day, think it’s the sun?

It seems that mosaics are very popular at the local elementary schools. I captured a few in photos today, and decided to showcase this humongous one at University Park Elementary School. There is even a girl riding a bike in this one.
Millie – you’re right. Elementary schools love to do these in art classes, especially with artist-in-residence projects. While the art teachers get to teach all kinds of good stuff, the math teachers get to sneak in a lot of good info about proportion and math and fractions and … so it’s like eating candy that’s good for you. This is a lovely one!

Plenty of options to choose from that are just barely out of home WiFi range. So as to not repeat Ken’s picture: the plaza between the lofts and Dance Place also feature some bean-shaped seating featuring wonderful mosaic designs. Here’s the one at the back near the Metro tracks (many people may have been here for check-in for the Cider Ride, for example, but this would’ve been behind a WABA table so harder to see).

There’s also one on the Arts Walk near Brookland Pint; it’s a very popular seating location during Saturday Farmer’s Markets and was well used by M back when there was a coffee shop there to get a nice treat (long ago when she still went outside)…

For what it’s worth, I stopped by a Church today and still got a flat tire!
While heading for a church, I turned onto an unseen patch of ice on the road and the wheels of my bike slid out from under me, causing me to crash. I lost the use of both brakes in the crash–both released, and the wire came out of the anchor bolt on one of them. I can only conclude that churches are hazardous to bicycles.

Mosaic Park in the Ballston neighborhood of Arlington does not have any sign at present indicating its name, but it does have these mosaics. They are not figurative, but they do meet the definition drevil provided.
On my ride back home the westerlies were starting to blow. I was forced to take shelter at Westover Beer Garden, where I spotted some friends similarly sheltering from the wind.

When I think of mosaics I think of churches! Here’s the one at the entrance of the Cathedral of St Matthew.

I believe this is the first time I’ve actually been able to come up with an item without Googling. I had noticed this at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Bethesda the other day as I biked by it. That was fortunate, because there are absolutely no references to it on Google.I managed it with only a sleaze ride. Which is just as well, as I also would have gotten an entry in the London Bridge contest for it if that were still being given this year. As I was turning a corner, I ran into a patch of glare ice and the wheels slid out from under me. I hit my head, both brakes released, and the wire came out of the anchor bolt on one of them. I figured that continuing on to get the photo after that was enough, without trying for more than a sleaze ride.
For anyone interested, there is a more professional photo of this (but sans bicycle) at this link.

On February 23, celebrate National Tile Day by seeking and taking a snapshot of a mosaic – a picture or pattern produced by arranging together small colored pieces of hard material, such as stone, tile, or glass.
The word “mosaic” is also acceptable, but I think it’s safe to say that we the horde prefer the art
Happy hunting!

And just to be contrary — the “Mosaic District” in Fairfax has the name but no mosaic works. Funny how they do have a beer garden though. That must be a standard?

After enjoying some chocolate cake with a friend in DC, I set out to find a mosaic near downtown. There are lots of big ol’ churches around, but it was night, and they had no lights on. So I got some lousy, difficult to see pictures of mosaic, stained glass windows at about three of them. I finally found one church with a sorta dim light on inside that was a little better. I settled for that one, and after wandering around for 45 minutes, I headed home.
Two blocks from home I passed under the Rte. 1 underpass on 18th St. S. and – Voila! – there were a dozen mosaics that I have seen a million times. D’oh.
I chose this one, because it sort of evokes bicycles, IMO.

Headed into DC for best odds on Mosaics. My “safety” of Mosaic park was quite weak (as accordioneur noted); there was a construction sign saying “Mosaic”….luckily I found something better.
The long mosaic (>50′ long) on Irving, which I originally found last year makes the grade for the day.

Participant2/24/21 – “Charles and Diana” Subanagram Word (5 letters or more)
Prince Charles and Lady Diana announced their engagement to the world on 2/24/81. Infuriating fact: after getting engaged to Charles, Diana was shamed into selling her bicycle because it “wasn’t very regal to be riding around London” 😡
On your ride, find a subanagram word (not the object) using just the letters “Charles and Diana”. Take a snapshot, and post your one pic here in the forum.
Happy hunting!
