“Down Stream”, ceramic, glass and stone mosaic by Martha Jackson Jarvis. This is the first panel of Jarvis’ installation incorporated into a fountain. The piece is located in front of the Shirlington Library. Thanks to Komorebi for including this stop on her most excellent arts ride.February 23, 2021 at 7:20 pm #1112334Serdar

I didn’t have time during my lunch break to ride down to the Shirlington Library in Arlington where I knew there was a mosaic (glad to see that some folks got various iterations of that one), but there was a nice set of mosaic stepping stones in my neighborhood that were crafted by the home owner. Very nice! These are at a house on the corner of N. Garfield Street and 4th St. N., on the 4th St. Side in Lyon Park, Arlington.

This may not count, but such is life. I only saw this, since it was a church in Rockville at a T-intersection, and I had to stop. I was more focused on dodging the rivers and lakes on the roads.

Colored glass is my favorite material for mosaics. Since stained glass hanging in my own home probably wouldn’t count, I offer up some lovely glass seen in a nearby church.

Tough choices. I found a mosaic on a church while we rode in Manassas but it wasn’t very complex and the light wasn’t great. So when I got back to Reston I hopped back on my bike and rode to a local elementary school where there’s a mosaic bird bath. The mosaic was created by artist Valerie Theberge who does a lot of mosaics in the DMV (including several in Reston). This poor bird bath is in an alcove, rarely seen, and obviously no running water because it was a bird skating rink while I was there. The most surprising thing to me was that there were BUSES there today with their engines going, ready to take kids home. I’ve gotten so used to NOT seeing buses that I completely forgot what time it was when I sailed into the parking lot!
You can find out more about the piece (and other public art in Reston) here: https://publicartreston.org/project/mosaic-birdbath/

As I headed up 8th St NE on the MBT, thinking that I would find some good mosaics at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (the Catholics love artistry!), I stumbled across the ArtSpace Loft apartment building and its artistic front.
I skipped past the shrine and cycled on, but this must have displeased the higher powers, since my front derailleur cable snapped about a mile later.

For what it’s worth, I stopped by a Church today and still got a flat tire!

I found some maybe mosaics but [emoji848] naaahhhh…. On my way home from what turned out to be a misadventure ride despite a great riding buddy and great weather, I just couldn’t shake this feeling /memory of a mosaic at my daughter’s elementary school.
My daughter is 23 and lives in NYC, so I didn’t know whether or not to trust this memory. But it was fun to ride to the school again – I used to ride her to school when she was in 1st & some of 2nd grade, in a double burley. (It was mostly all hers by then – her brother was in 5th grade when she was in 1st – and while she’s always been on the small side, her brother is the opposite…. She’s just under 5’2 now and he’s just under 6’2″. He was almost my size by 5th grade. He used my size helmet when he was 5… now he uses that XL helmet size that only 2 companies make… She uses my helmet size. [emoji1744])
Anyhow I got to the school and saw that the mosaic had been put up during Em’s first year there! No wonder I remembered it.
I do hope it counts as a mosaic. It’s a li’l different w/its regular shaped tiles & design…

It seems that mosaics are very popular at the local elementary schools. I captured a few in photos today, and decided to showcase this humongous one at University Park Elementary School. There is even a girl riding a bike in this one.

Returned from the Manassas LOVE ride and rode to the birdhouse forest before flute tooting. I didn’t even realize I also capturing the mosaic wall in the distance. What a glorious day, think it’s the sun?
