EDIT 3/17/21 – FINAL WEEK POST HERE: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?18102-Freezing-Saddles-2021-Daily-Photo-Scavenger-Hunt&p=209861#post209861

I love taking photos, and having a goal usually ups the fun factor, so I’m doing a daily photo scavenger hunt.

Every night, I’ll post something you have to take a picture of the next day (along with the date). I’ll try my best to post before midnight.

It might be an object (a stop sign), a theme (something blue), specific (e.g., a bike laying on the ground), vague (e.g., confusion), a mish-mash of those, or none of those.

    Rules:

    1. Obvs, you should be a participant in Freezing Saddles ’21
    2. It has to be on a bike ride on the day it was requested
    3. It has to be posted on the day for which it was requested, i.e., 12:01 AM EST to 11:59 PM EST for the day it was requested. Sorry, I won’t count ones that aren’t posted for the day it was requested. That’s part of the challenge :)
    4. The reason I say “for the day it is requested” is because I might do requests a few days ahead of time, but don’t take and/or post the pic until that day comes.
    5. It has to be posted here on the forum in this thread
    6. There should be text either in the title or in the post with the date and the found object/theme. Another option is to “Reply With Quote” the post with the request, i.e., simply click that button on the bottom right of my request so it is quoted above your picture
    7. Description, short backstory or location are optional (but nice). That said, if your pic is abstract or not obviously relatable to my request, please explain (e.g., I ask for “happiness”, and you post a pic of a tennis ball you found on a ride, please explain how that tennis ball = happiness)
    8. It has to be a picture you took, so if you’re in it, it either has to be a selfie or done with a self-timer
    9. Only one pic/day. Please don’t pad by adding more than one pic/day
    10. It has to be a picture, not a video
    11. Let’s stick to things you find out there during your ride, and not things that you bring or make yourself (unless otherwise specified). Example 1: if I say find “2021”, don’t scratch it into dirt. Example 2: if I say find a flower, don’t bring a flower with you on your ride and take a pic of that. This kinda takes the fun out of looking for things, which is the whole point. (Rule added on 1/2/21)
    12. Unless specified otherwise, your bike does not have to be in the photo. (Rule amended on 1/4/21)
    13. Found item needs to be clear and discernible (or legible if text) in the picture. If you are using Tapatalk and are having trouble posting pics that are large enough, let us know and I/we can try to help you with it. (Rule added on 1/3/21)
    14. Filters are OK, but no obvious/blatant photoshopping… not that I know anything about such things

    Scoring: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kgsAzaLIXN-IJMjscyNnQTNvWEp__VzgGBSkJDYrTfs/edit?usp=sharing

    1. If you follow all the rules above, it’s 1 point/picture. I’ll like your pic if I have added the point to the tally sheet.
    2. If I feel like you haven’t met all the rules, I’ll give you .25 points for the effort (Added on 1/11/21)
    3. I’ll keep a tally with your forum name. I may reach out to you via the forum’s messaging, or ask you to reach out to me in a post in this thread.
    4. EDIT ON 3/17/21: THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN ANYMORE -> At the end of FS, every like in each of your pic posts = +1 point. I’ll add these up at the end :D
So for example, your pic has met all the conditions at the top, and has 3 likes. That will add 4 points (1 for the pic +3 for the likes) to your pot.

    Notes:

    1. Prizes TBD
    2. Contest starts 1/1/21 and goes until the last day of FS ’21
    3. Some of these will be hard. Fret not, some will be easy, so skip those days that are too difficult
    4. Don’t ever ever ever ever do anything that can put you in danger or will result in hurting yourself. I promise I won’t ask for any pics of you riding on the Beltway ;)
    5. I might post pics, but mine don’t count in the contest

    2/22/21 purple house
This is the purple pirate house (there wasn’t any wind to lift the pirate flag). This is one of those houses I haven’t been in for about a year now, but I can’t wait to stand in the kitchen sipping whiskey again soon. [emoji171]1ced7972e9442b92ada9c23292944f19.jpg

    2/22 – Purple “House”

What is an apartment building but a big house for many people divided into separate spaces? Near Woodridge Library on Rhode Island Ave NE is The Violet, with a subtle coloring to match the name (even if the lighting makes it even more subtle)…

(Britannica also calls it an “apartment house”)

    2/22/21 – Purple House

I wanted to present the purple house for Fairfax County glass recycling but convinced myself it was not a house. Next the HOA rules for earth-tone colors hampered the search for purple, even on Purple Sage Lane. I present a beautiful, tasteful purple door with a red, not pink, winter wreath..Enjoy.

I agree with others that what looks purple in real life doesn’t necessarily look so purple once you’re looking at the photo later.

I had a much more colorful house, but I wasn’t sure sure if it was quite purple enough, and it was edging towards pink. My photo lopped off the second floor, but this house looks like your prototypical Philly rowhouse, but with much prettier window boxes than most.

At the risk of losing a perfectly good pointless point, I’m going to offer the following as creative interpretation that doesn’t require photoshop:

The call was for a purple house. It did not specify that the house must be a house for humans. Thus, I offer this purple tree painted on the side of a parking garage where birds nest in the spaces.

After all, it’s just a point. :-) Plus, all the photos I took of houses with purple-ish shutters didn’t look purple once I got home. Purple really is in the eye of the beholder when there are HOA restrictions on color!

    Brilliant, imho!

My mom lives down on the border, and the culture there cheerfully embraces bright colors as well as thriftiness. In some neighborhoods you can see the progression of one person’t leftovers to another person’s front door to someone else’s roof trim, etc. It’s quiet delightful. I live in Reston which restricts color choices to specific ‘earth tones’ so we will bike this afternoon to a less restrictive area!

Even in the Reston neighborhoods that allow a little color, no purple that I could find. Yellow, red, blue, green doors yes, but no purple. [emoji53]

I’m really excited to share with you all the purple house in my neighborhood. Not only is it painted a totally awesome purple color, but it is the headquarters (or at least the place of residence) of Looney Labs – aka the folks who created the popular and fun card game Fluxx. Check them out here: https://www.looneylabs.com/

Of course I also love that they have a purple car… and do you see the purple bicycle on the porch??? Purple. Purple. Purple! :)

Ok, it’s not a house, but South Arlington’s notorious and recently shuttered Purple Lounge is too purple not to submit.

    2/22/21 – purple house

I did an image search on “purple door alexandria” to see what might pop up. I went to an address that had shown a purple door, but the door was definitely blue, not purple.
However, all around that neighborhood were a variety of homes of different colors with different accents. Some were kinda purple (periwinkle? mauve? maroon?), but the longer I would look, the less purple each one seemed. I kept collecting photos hoping for an even more purple one than the last.
This is what I ended with.

2/22/21 – Purple House – The house does not have to be totally purple — it can have purple shutters or a door.

2/22/21 – Purple. There used to be a purple house in our neighborhood, but when the family sold it and the new owners painted it green. And then there was a used car dealership on Glebe Road that was painted a very garish purple with yellow trim. Well, that got painted over a few years ago. Darn! So, I couldn’t find a totally purple house, but I did find a house with nice matching purple front door and garage door in Arlington.

I had a similar problem. I found a house (image here) described in Bethesda magazine as having “dark purple trim.” When I arrived, the red/orange bits were gone, and the trim looked blue rather than purple to me. I’m not sure whether they repainted the purple bits blue, or whether the author of the magazine article had a different view than I did of what “dark purple” meant. (The color the article said they used definitely looks more blue than purple to me.) But I passed a house on the way there that was pretty much solid purple, and decided to use that rather than worry about what color that trim actually was.

I’m sure that when it was in operation there were people who pretty much lived there …

2/23/21 – Mosaic (likeness or word)

On February 23, celebrate National Tile Day by seeking and taking a snapshot of a mosaic – a picture or pattern produced by arranging together small colored pieces of hard material, such as stone, tile, or glass.

The word “mosaic” is also acceptable, but I think it’s safe to say that we the horde prefer the art :)

    Happy hunting!

(Really cool mosaic photo stolen from Mark Brody’s site.)
