Participant1/17/21 – Bird House or Bird Bath
I can’t tell if it’s just in the UK, but February 14-21 is National Nest Box Week, but I’ve also seen it listed as Homes for Birds Week. Fun fact: George Lucas’ (creator of Star Wars) wife commissioned a bird house, which was a 7′ wide reproduction of their Skywalker Ranch residence.
On your ride, find a bird house, bird feeder or a bird bath, snap a pic, and post it here for 1 point. If you capture a live bird on any of those three things, that’ll be 2 points total.
Happy hunting!

Was hoping to find something more authentic, but Mardi Gras does not seem to be a thing here in the Lehigh Valley of PA, so I went with this packaged good that I found while at the check out counter of the local convenience store

Mardi Gras, aka Fat Tuesday, is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday. Fun fact: if you want to ride on a Mardi Gras float you must wear a mask. In fact, it is actually illegal to ride one without one!
On your ride, find a crown (that sits on top of your head) or a mask (that has eyeholes). If you find the word, it’ll be 1 point. If you find a likeness, that’ll be 2 points total.
Happy hunting!

2/17/2021 — bird house, bird bath, or bird feeder. I found two bird houses and a bird feeder on Commonwealth Avenue. I could hear birds chirping in the trees, but it was too cold to wait around for them to fly down and get breakfast.

This was a more interesting challenge since it forced me to slow down to look for a bird house or feeder. I figured all the bird baths would be frozen today. I spotted these two feeders in the tree but no birds. So I loitered for a bit until they came for breakfast.

When I first arrived there was a beautiful bluebird on the suet feeder, but his photo didn’t show due to contrast. I was at a distinct disadvantage being 12 feet below them. But I looked at sun angle and repositioned and waited. Finally some LBJ’s (little brown jobs) ventured nearer. Wouldn’t you know it, they were camera shy? But I took this terrible photo anyway, and that little fluffy bit at the right of the feeder is the bird.

I found a real bird in his real house! Although getting the bike in the pic without stopping traffic was more than fun!

This was fun. I would have kept going but my phone battery tanked fast so I rushed home. I found one neighborhood tree with 8 bird houses hanging from it!! I also found a bird feeder that was truly the place for lunch. The photo’s not great because my phone is ancient, but at least 3 of the 6 or so birds taking turns feeding are visible. I almost even caught the nearby squirrel who tried to sneak up on the party but he got camera shy.

Participant2/17 Bird House
This is at the Charles Will memorial park in Del Ray on Dewitt Ave. There are a few dozen birdhouses in the trees here but someone was mowing (why?) and no birds around.

Several bird houses, plus two birds on one of them, plus a third bird about to make a landing on a different one.

Mowing – why? I often ask those questions…the only thing I can guess is, “We have a contract so we do it!” Bureaucracy has a hard time turning anything off. Witness all the overbuilding of office space when clearly the planet has changed in the need for same.

Participant2/17/2021 Bird feeder/bath/house (with bonus bird)
I saw lots of bird feeders, houses and baths on my ride but birds were eluding me. However, my daughter, who delivers for a pizza restaurant, had told me about a house that had lots of bird feeders and houses in the front yard. She said that there were always birds hanging around the yard. It didn’t take long for a bird to land on the feeder. It also didn’t take long for the homeowner to come out and ask me what I was doing. After explaining our crazy scavenger hunt and asking if it was OK for me to take pictures, she left me to my picture taking.
