I rode to Old Town hoping to find a Mardi Gras mask in the window of one of its many souvenir shops but instead met a nice lady wearing that mask. I asked politely, and the rest is history now.

The “crown” atop the jester’s head on this bottle of Prophecy Pinot Noir seems to fit the spirit of Mardi Gras. Found at the only store I enter these days—CVS.

2/16/21 – Fat Tuesday – Crown or Mask with eyeholes

Did the multi-modal thing to go up to Dewey Park in MD and see those amazing murals – thanks to all who have shown them off in this and other threads. Rode through Bethesda downtown thinking it would be easy to find a crown. My fallback was the Starbucks lady. But my riding partner needed to get back quicker than I so she did the Starbucks lady just in case. I gave in and went into see a bartender at World of Beer to take a photo of a Corona. She laughed at my request and thought it was a great game (everyone loves this game when you explain it!). As I came out, Lefty Laura pointed across the street — there was a Smoothie King – with crown on the logo. But it wasn’t as pretty as my Corona bottle so here it is.

This is the first time in years that I haven’t had a Mardi Gras gig. Blah. I will have to mix myself a sazerac and play some bayou tunes on the squeezebox.

Throughout this contest I’ve been trying to avoid the easy way out of just going to a store that sells the day’s thing. Today I was going to finally cop out and photograph Mardi Gras masks at Ayers Hardware and Variety in Westover, but once again I forgot that in COVID times they’re closed on Tuesday. Fortunately, the Walgreens was open and they sell Hallmark cards. Laissez les vélos rouler!

Mardi Gras, aka Fat Tuesday, is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday. Fun fact: if you want to ride on a Mardi Gras float you must wear a mask. In fact, it is actually illegal to ride one without one!

On your ride, find a crown (that sits on top of your head) or a mask (that has eyeholes). If you find the word, it’ll be 1 point. If you find a likeness, that’ll be 2 points total.

Searched high and low on a 35 mile ride without luck for a crown or mask (with eye holes) or the word. Desperation led me to the local ABC store and purchase of a mini Royal Crown Black bottle of whiskey.
