[emoji50] so what DO they mean? I mean – what is it that encompasses both “cheap wine” and “star”? Is it translateable?
That’s very cool btw.

Magen or Mogen (alternative transliterations of the same Hebrew word) means “shield,” so “shield of David.” The star was on (King) David’s shield, and is a traditional symbol of Judaism. The wine is a kosher wine, and adopted that as its trademark to indicate its Jewish connection.

On February 11, 1847, Thomas Edison was born. Known as America’s greatest inventor, he and an associate (William Dickson) invented the kinetograph – the first camera to take motion pictures on a moving film strip. Fun fact: Edison was a key figure to Hollywood becoming the mecca of cinema due to his heavy-handed tactics with the competition.
On your ride, capture a movie poster and post the picture here in the forum.
Optionally, when you post your pic, let us know what your favorite bikecentric movie is, if you have one.
Happy hunting!

Not only is there a star, but this photo features another prominent thing on today’s ride: driving sleet.

Landmark Bethesda Row has something of the vibe of Pompeii these days–everything frozen in time when it was suddenly abandoned. There are two fading posters out front under “Now Playing” signs, even though they haven’t been playing since last March. Those can be seen on my Strava ride. But this one (inside, over the ticket booth) was easier to read than the ones that had weathered over the past year.

Here’s a film (and “quizzo”?) poster from a local theater. I hate to admit it, but I’ve never actually seen Wayne’s World, so I should probably get on that. Like cvcalhoun said, it’s a bit of an abandoned vibe. There’s no year on that date, but Thursday March 5th looks to be from 2020.
The only bike-centric movie that I’ve seen is Premium Rush, and I wasn’t into bikes at the time — I just was on a nearly empty Greyhound bus in South Africa and that’s what was showing. Little did I know it’d inspire my core ethos:

Such an evocative description.
I’d like to say you’re wasting your poet’s soul on the law, but [emoji848] poetry doesn’t pay too well so….. We’ll appreciate it for you [emoji1]

Same creepiness going on over here…no theater has been open since March of last year!
As for my favorite bike movie…I don’t remember the name but it was about a cyclist that helped the Jews in Italy…he would put paperwork that helped the Jews in his seat tube so no one would find them!

This has been a difficult one in downtown DC. The theater in Georgetown had removed the poster spaces outside the theater, nothing was up at the Gallery Place theaters, and both Atlantic Plumbing and E Street Cinema were completely boarded up. The West End Cinema didn’t have any posters on display outside, but I could spot a few far back in their lobby. I was able to barely get them in the picture.
As for my favorite biking-related movie, I have a abiding love for Breaking Away, especially as it explores the relationship between the father and son. The father doesn’t quite understand him, but supports him and wants a better life for him. One of my favorite scenes is when they are walking through the campus as night: https://youtu.be/qhiqjAAILGg
*Edit*
I went back in the evening and the posters were showing a bit better in the dark.February 11, 2021 at 7:36 pm #1111496CaseyKane50

Movie poster at the AMC Theater on Hoffman Drive (used to be Swamp Fox Road) in the Carlyle area of Alexandria. Sadly, it is the last theater in Alexandria.
My favorite bike movie is Breaking Away.

Two of my favorite actors, Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. Hoping we get to enjoy the movie theater experience again.

That was about Gino Bartali. I just recently read his biography, Road to Valor: the True Story of WWII Italy, the Nazis, and the Cyclist Who Inspired the Nation. I’ve not seen the movie, but the biography is EXCELLENT and worth tracking down.

Who knew this was going to be so sad today looking for movie posters? I think we’re all having the same experience mourning the loss of an entire culture – even if we weren’t big moviegoers ourselves, we knew that world was there for us to take part in when we wished. And now, faded posters and empty buildings.
My favorite cycling movie is The Triplets of Belleville. If you haven’t seen it, grab your favorite beverage and find it to watch this weekend. We can all use a bit of levity and this is FUNNY.

Angelika Film Center (Fairfax, VA) is a great venue for independent and specialty films. Unfortunately it was closed today for a private event. Like DCAKen, I tried getting a picture through windows, but it was too dark inside. Then Boomer2U cycles up looking for the daily photo scavenger picture, too. Boomer found a worker, kindly described what we were doing and asked if we could be allowed inside, with our bicycles, to get a picture. Some what reluctantly, the worker said yes. Score.
