In Bethesda, you can’t go a block without tripping over a pizza place. I went to Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza. On the way back, I noticed M&N Pizza’s former location (which has interesting architecture and includes the word “pizza”), but decided against it since it doesn’t currently sell pizza. M&N’s current location is much more nondescript, and doesn’t say “Pizza” anywhere on it. And there was also Aden’s Pizza. However, since only one photo is allowed…

This hunt doesn’t require the word “pizza” to be in the pic, just that it be a pizzeria. Thanks for the recommendation though!

I went looking for the farthest one…but ended up with a pic of the closest one!

Adams Morgan is the home to several pizza joints, all hawking varieties of the Jumbo Slice. For a while, there was a fierce competition, with signs proclaiming “Home of the Jumbo Slice” and “The Original Jumbo Slice” and “The Real Jumbo Slice”. All of them were open until 5 am on the weekends to feed the crowds after last call.

The one thing they all had in common was that their deliciousness was inversely proportional to your sobriety.

2/9/21 – Pizza! (but not Pizza Hut or Domino’s)

I grew up in Brooklyn, where every day was pizza day! I was fortunate that one of our neighborhood pizza places was DiFara’s, which these days is a fixture on “Best Pizza” lists. Dom DiMarco opened the place in 1965. Dom is now well into his 80’s and no longer has the energy to run the place full time, but you can still sometimes find him behind the counter making pizza. His daughter runs the place now.

Locally, here’s another photo from the Westover shopping area in Arlington, which is turning out to be a photo hunt gold mine. The Italian Store makes a pretty decent New York style slice. The owners are from Philadelphia, which is close enough that they have some idea how to do NY pizza right. My other local favorite is Pupatella – excellent Neopolitan style.

I’m feeling a little under the weather today, so my ride was just out to get the photo and back. Given my upset stomach, I probably won’t even eat pizza today :(

Lena’s Wood-Fired Pizza and Tap. Good pizza and a decent selection of beers. If you haven’t filled up on pizza and beer, suggest you order their cinnamon sugar dusted apple-ricotta doughnut holes. Lena’s is on Braddock Road and Mount Vernon Avenue, near the Potomac Yard and the Braddock Road Metro. Lots of outdoor seating.

Every year, National Pizza Day falls on February 9. Fun fact, the domain “pizza.com” was purchased in 1994 by the owner of a software company for $20. Fourteen years later, he sold the domain for 2.6 million dollars! I just checked the URL, and there’s nothing even there right now. I guess they had a hard time recouping the money from buying the URL?

Anyways, on your ride, capture the storefront, a pie, or a slice of these doughy, cheesy, saucy slabs of heaven and post it here. The only catch with this hunt is that it can’t be Pizza Hut or Domino’s. Besides, if your favorite pizza is from either of those, try exploring other spots! ;)

If you don’t mind revealing your favorite local pizza joint to the rest of us, we won’t complain. While you’re at it, let us know what you especially enjoy eating there.

    Happy hunting! :)

I’m in pizzalandia, but don’t go out much for it. Today I stopped at Café La Cerra/Brick Oven Pizza on 1st Ave in Turtle Bay (Midtown East) for my coffee. They also have pizza.

The photo has the word “pizza,” a representation of a pizza for a sign, and inside the window, a rack of pizzas.

A new to us discovery — BaddPizza in Falls Church — which has turned out to be pretty tasty.

I’ve never eaten here. It just happened to be a block away from my Civil War marker of the day at Courthouse Square in Rockville.

    2/9/2021 – Pizza

Currently my favorite pizza is a beautiful melding of 2Fifty’s pulled pork and Dumm’s pizza in Riverdale Park, MD. Owned by the same super nice couple, they have award-winning barbeque, and this pizza features pulled pork, pineapple, and red onions. Unfortunately, not so easy to carry on the bicycle.

PS – We have determined that historygeek wasn’t really stalking me today. Or at least not in a malicious manner. ;)

So funny to see such an entry be yours. I was expecting cbganimal, since it’s early afternoon in Spain.

There are a bunch of reasons my posts often come shortly after midnight:

    1. I’m high risk. A time when there are no humans around keeps me safe.
    2. I tend to be more or less on call during the day and evening, even when I’m not actively working. After midnight is the one time I’m pretty sure no one will be looking for me.
    3. Most of the traffic lights around here switch to blinking at midnight, which means I’m not constantly waiting for lights.
    4. There is very little traffic after midnight, and the few cars on the road have a whole lane to get around me, so I don’t have to worry about crazy motorists as much.

So I mostly go out shortly after midnight, unless there is something (e.g., having to find people skateboarding or to get ice cream) that is not possible at night.
