I’ve talked about Clif 2 Mile Challenge in the past. The idea is to get people to leave their cars at home and take more trips by bike. Sounds like a great sort of challenge for people on this board. You don’t have to be an endurance cyclist to be awesome at this challenge… in fact it is likely easier for people who don’t do long rides. The people who consistently do well in this challenge are the people who just ride around town doing what they do.

Here’s the kicker this month: If they get 10,000 cycling trips registered in July, Washington Area Bicycle Association gets a $10,000 grant from Clif.

    Here’s the blog entry: http://2milechallenge.com/challenge/July_2012_Challenge

Sign up is easy and quick. The interface is really easy to enter your trips… Just put in mileage and an optional comment about your ride and click enter. You don’t need a GPS. The mileage doesn’t have to be exact. They really want to count the number of times during the day or week that you got on your bike. You’re able to enter up to 4 trips per day.

This has been one of my favorite riding challenges for a while because it gives a TON to organizations that really work for better bicycling.

Let me know if you have question.

    Pete

A side benefit will be that I will no longer have to log each ride three separate times: Clif Bar 2-Mile Challenge, National Bike Challenge, personal training log. All this logging and record-keeping is starting to bog me down. Maybe we can get to 10,000 by the 12th.

Almost at 5,000 now, on July 10.

I’m predicting that we’ll reach 10,000 rides on the 17th. Do I win a CLIF Bar if I’m right?

Has any city actually reached the 10K limit I wonder?

This is the third month for the challenge. If I’m not mistaken, the first two challenges were not met… not even close. DC area is KICKING BUTT! This is, however, the largest market they’ve done so far. The first was in Kansas, the second was….. Shoot I forgot. I’ll go see if I can look it up.

May was Bike/Walk KC and got about 6900 trips.

June was some little po-dunk town… Los Angeles? They got about 8900.

I don’t think they have the Internet out there in California.

I’m putting this site in my regular round of updates after a ride, even after the WABA month ends. That way, I’m helping out some other communities that may not have the numbers locally, but could definitely use the money…

I didn’t look too closely, but I wonder who the August beneficiary is?

I’ve been doing this challenge for the last few years. I like it because it really does give a decent sized grant to groups that can really use it. I’ve grown to enjoy the local bent to it. It says a lot for WABA, Bike Arlington and the power of li’l ole us that we can really execute on this better than LA and KC did.

I wonder if the fact the DC area has so many bike commuters is helping to push us over the top. I’m logging 2x a day during the workweek.

That said, we may hit the 10k mark by mid-month and we’ve already had 3 weekend days and a holiday this month.

In any case – keep riding and logging!

    We’re at 5382!

I worked out with a friend that I can ride to her house (about 2.5 miles) and Metro in on days I don’t do my full 10 mile commute – that way I can start ramping up my miles and log more rides!

Since the bike trips aren’t limited to those from DC area residents, maybe our great showing is the result of the organization and promotion abilities of area cyclists. It’s like the D.C. resident “campaign” gene got activated and we broke out the email lists, Facebook contacts, Twitter followers and texting contacts. Sort of the way that we do with political causes (cycling and non-cycling-related), budget and infrastructure meetings and so on.

This is not a complaint. Merely an observation.

I think you’re probably right, PC. Kinda why I started this thread… and conversations on FB and Twitter. This is near and dear to our hearts, so we’re a bit more willing to make the effort when every trip means a buck for WABA.

Looks like we’ll wrap this up Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
