I’ve talked about Clif 2 Mile Challenge in the past. The idea is to get people to leave their cars at home and take more trips by bike. Sounds like a great sort of challenge for people on this board. You don’t have to be an endurance cyclist to be awesome at this challenge… in fact it is likely easier for people who don’t do long rides. The people who consistently do well in this challenge are the people who just ride around town doing what they do.

Here’s the kicker this month: If they get 10,000 cycling trips registered in July, Washington Area Bicycle Association gets a $10,000 grant from Clif.

    Here’s the blog entry: http://2milechallenge.com/challenge/July_2012_Challenge

Sign up is easy and quick. The interface is really easy to enter your trips… Just put in mileage and an optional comment about your ride and click enter. You don’t need a GPS. The mileage doesn’t have to be exact. They really want to count the number of times during the day or week that you got on your bike. You’re able to enter up to 4 trips per day.

This has been one of my favorite riding challenges for a while because it gives a TON to organizations that really work for better bicycling.

Let me know if you have question.

    Pete

Despite the lack of an apology, I have been logging my rides.

As a westerner who doesn’t pay attention to either sports, thank you!

I’m logging daily too, but will try to step up my game a little. That may mean finding more excuses to have fun in Shirlington.

Just fyi – it’s getting a little bawdy over there. Saw “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” at Signature Theater last night. They have special $40 “drop your drawers” ticket pricing for the show if you bring new underwear or other specified items for donation to A-SPAN. Also, Signature is having a special benefit variety show (mature audiences only – that may leave all of us out ;) ) on Monday night called “Summer Hummer” for $25. Proceeds will be distributed by a board to assist DC area theatre artists with serious unexpected medical and other needs. Call 703-820-9771 for info or tickets.

Trips are just under 7400 with one week left to go, which means 10K is still achievable. They need 600 rides over the weekend, and 400 per day on the weekdays, which is about what they’ve been doing the past two work weeks (weekends would need a big bump though).

Can we do 1679 trips in a hair over 4 days? We should try! Please log some trips!

Our friends in Massachusetts are making this way more exciting than it needs to be. As of a few minutes ago, the challenge was at 8712 trips. They were at 300 trips for today (a number that should increase), leaving three days to bag 1288 trips (avg daily 429 for three days). The challenge has only hit over 429 trips four times this month. I’ve logged more trips for MA than I did for WABA/LA/KC

Talk about taking it to the wire!

They’ll be close. But at least it’s not all or nothing. If they reach 9,990 for example, they still receive $9,990, instead of the full $10,000. So even if they don’t quite make it, they will only lose out on a minimal amount of money.

I’ve been hitting Twitter and FB a bit on this and getting a fair number of retweets and shares. People are paying attention and hopefully responding. It will be close.

You’re right.. the 10,000 trip goal is largely symbolic, but it is still a symbol that would be nice to hammer out.

It is at 9311 right now. The trip counts for the past three days have been over 400 so it looks like they (we) might hit the ceiling. Way more exciting than the WABA challenge where we put it to bed much earlier in the month.

I think I like our local approach better.

Did WABA have any (more) leftover trips to contribute? I’ve been logging but have about 10-15 less trips logged than in July.

653 trips left. I think we might make it!

The challenge sits at 9,679 trips, leaving the rest of today and tomorrow to net 321 trips. It is looking like success will be achieved sometime tomorrow afternoon, leaving 6 to 8 hours to spare. I still like our approach (finish early in the month) better.

The challenge is at 9,700. Maybe there are a bunch of sprint riders up in Massachusetts! Just waiting for the opportunity to sprint to the finish.

I think they misunderstood the goal of the contest. Seems like someone told them they had to hit 10,000 exactly, not one ride more and not one less.

The challenge is at 9,770. It looks like success. All you folks that have been doing a track-stand for the past month can crank it up for the last lap.
