ParticipantI enjoyed a good local brew and an interesting and fun visit with one of the BikeWalkKC guys and his wife tonight. They’re doing a lot for KC cycling with just a little funding and a few people, and they really appreciate all the rides everyone logged to help them meet the full Clif Challenge! I was given some little BikeWalkKC momentos to share with you all at the happy hour. Many thanks to all who helped!
There are some pretty cool biking trails around here (especially the 240 mile Katy trail), great neighborhoods and restaurants, good local microwbreweries and an art museum that I wish I had time to get to. I want to come back!

ParticipantI’m still logging for MA…

ParticipantIt’s looking like it will be difficult for Mass. Here it is the 10th of the month and they are at 2400 trips. They are about 900 behind the pace necessary to get to 10,000.

Yeah, they’ve got eight from me. Who’s actually riding in MA? Maybe we should schedule a ride up Mass Ave as a sign of solidarity?
We’re going up to Cape Cod this weekend. We’ll have our bikes so we’ll log our trips for sure. Woo hoo!

ParticipantI’ve been logging all my rides for them too. I assume there were non-DCers logging for WABA.

ParticipantI haven’t been as diligent as I was for our month, but I still have 10 rides or so logged.

ParticipantI’ve gone up and posted on a few MA-based cycling forums and blogs… suggesting that they can really rock this into a good grant if they put a bit of work into outreach. I got some positive response from people, but no movement on a few places. I need to hammer my Boston-based twitter friends.
DC area really kicked butt for WABA. Shows that we’ve got a great community and some great organizations… this one included.

ParticipantI’ve been logging all my rides this month as well. But the Massachusetts people need to step up their game. Boston is a large city with many Internet-connected young adults. They need to do better.

ParticipantI don’t want to minimize WABA/BikeArlington’s and the #bikeDC community’s awesomeness, but I wonder if WABA’s more concentrated regional focus gave us a big advantage. I suspect that most Mass. riders are concentrated in Boston, but it seems that MassBike is a statewide advocate, so it may not have the resources to be as involved in Boston cycling as WABA is for the DC region. Maybe?

ParticipantI think we should give all of these groups the benefit of the doubt and not try to judge them. They’re all working for better cycling and the regional or statewide ones are bound to have a harder time recruiting riders than the more localized ones. Statewide and regional efforts are important too. The whole point of the Clif challenge is to allow cyclists in different places to help each other. It’s one of the things I really like about this challenge. Also, some places are just getting started with developing a cycling community and those are likely the ones most in need of funds.

ParticipantI’m not judging them. I’m trying to motivate them (in case any of them or their DC area friends are lurking on the forum). A gentle Internet kick in the pants isn’t so bad. Certainly not as bad as missing out on thousands of dollars from the 2 Mile Challenge.

ParticipantWas just over 4k when I logged my morning ride, and we’re just about to the halfway point…so it’s going to be tough to get to 10k. But if anyone can help make it happen, it’s us!

Tweet about it. If you have friends who ride in MA, then talk to them and get them going on it. I’ve done some and posted on a few boston-based blogs about it. I don’t have as much time to dive into helping with this as I’d like. Lots of other stuff on the stove.
Thank you all for your continued support.

ParticipantAs of yesterday, the challenge was at 3920. If you straight line the rides/day to get to 10,000 at the end of the month, they are about 600 below the needed pace. That said, the rides posted on Monday and Tuesday of the week were well above (about 125) the pace and were the highs for the month.
If all riders pull this rope together (we can relitigate the super bowl or world series over beer), the challenge is doable.
As the recent transportation bill showed, cycling advocacy is a local issue and only when it has local support will there be effective national support. It is up to the communities where there are a critical mass of cyclists to keep this moving.
Please join me in logging trips for Boston!

Despite the lack of an apology, I have been logging my rides.
